SPARTANS SEASON ENDS IN VICTORIA
VICTORIA, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University men’s hockey team dropped their final game of the 2012-13 season 7-2 to the University of Victoria Friday night at the Ian Stewart Complex in Victoria, B.C. The loss drops the Spartans to 6-16-0-2 and out of post season contention, while the win moves Victoria to 10-13-0-1.
The game was a tough one for the Spartans, who had been eliminated from play-off contention with Friday night’s loss. Victoria outshot the Trinity Western 32-27 on their way to the five goal win.
The Vikes jumped out early to lead 2-0 after the first period power play goals from Eli Wiebe at 10:03 and Shawn Mueller at 11:03.
The Spartans Sam Gemmell cut the Vikes lead to one goal with his own marker at 4:29 of the second period. But it was as close as TWU would get to the home town Vikes tonight. Victoria’s Shawn Mueller scored on the power play at 9:09 and at 18:22. In between Adam Klein found the back of the net to make the score after 40 minutes 5-1 for the Vikes.
Trinity Western’s Jamey Kreller opened the scoring at 3:30 of the final period to pull the Spartans within three, trailing 5-2. The Vikes Adam Klein got his second of the night at 7:13, while Mark Callaghan made the final 7-2 with another Victoria power play goal at 9:22.
Tomoki Yoshizawa, making his first start for the Spartans, made 25 saves in the loss, while Victoria’s Sunny Gill made 25 saves to record the win.
The win gives the Vikes the fourth and final BCIHL play-off spot, while the loss puts the Spartans in last place for the season.
