SIMON FRASER (4) TRINITY WESTERN (0)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS FALL TO SFU IN PRESEASON OPENER
BURNABY, British Columbia – Playing Simon Fraser in its preseason opener, the Trinity Western men’s hockey team fell 4-0 to the Clan Friday at Kensington Arena.
Simon Fraser got goals from four different sources as Taylor Piller, Jono Ceci, Trevor Milner and Josh McKissock all got in on the action.
McKissock and Piller also each added an assist while Michael Sandor, Jesse Mysiorek and Graham Smerek also hit the scoresheet with helpers.
“After (goalie) Harry Fredeman (Ladner, B.C.) stood on his head through the first period to keep us in it, our final 40 minutes of the game was definitely where we need to be in terms of compete level,” said first year coach Barret Kropf, who was behind the bench for his first game with TWU. “I thought the guys battled hard but obviously there are a lot of adjustments we’ll have to make given it’s our first preseason game of the year.
“Once we get going, I think we’re going to be right there and hanging with some of the top teams in the league. We’re pretty excited about that, but we have lots of things to build on.”
The Clan got on the board just 3:01 into the first period when Piller opened the scoring. Ceci then scored at 15:53 or the first to give SFU a 2-0 lead going into the middle stanza.
After a scoreless second period, the Clan salted the win away late in the third period with Milner scoring at 15:11 and McKissock tallying with exactly one minute left in the contest.
Fredeman was in the crease for the first 40 minutes before Tim Zwiers (Williams Lake, B.C.) played the final 20 minutes. For SFU Graeme Gordon played the first two periods and Andrew Parent played the third period.
The Spartans are back on the ice Saturday when they host Thompson Rivers at the Langley Sportsplex at 8 p.m.
Game Notes: TWU was 0 for 5 on the power play while SFU was 0 for 4.
