SPARTANS BETTERED BY SELKIRK IN PRESEASON ACTION

NELSON, British Columbia – The Trinity Western men’s hockey team allowed four third period goals as a scoreless first 40 minutes turned into a 4-0 loss to Selkirk Friday at the Nelson and District Community Complex.

An energetic first two periods saw the teams remain stuck at a stalemate after the first two periods. However, thanks to a pair of power play goals, Selkirk busted open the floodgates in the third period as it pulled away to win by a four-goal margin.

The Spartans are now 1-2 in the preseason and will be back on the ice Saturday when they play Selkirk in Castlegar at 7:30 p.m. Selkirk is 4-2 in six preseason contests.

“We definitely battled for the first 40 minutes, which was exciting to see, but our guys kind of folded up in the last 10 minutes,” said Spartans coach Barret Kropf. “We got some good scoring chances but we just couldn’t break the goose egg. Overall, it was a good test to see where we stand against the defending champions.”

Spartans goalie Silas Matthys (Pfaffikon, Switzerland) played 40 minutes of shutout hockey before giving way to Tim Zwiers (Williams Lake, B.C.) for the third period.
