FREDEMAN EARNS SHUTOUT WIN OVER EAGLES
LANGLEY, British Columbia – Trinity Western men’s hockey goalie Harry Fredeman (Ladner, B.C.) picked up his first shutout of the season as he led the Spartans to a 4-0 win over Eastern Washington Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.
Fredeman made 30 saves to earn his first goose egg of the year and help the Spartans (2-2) to their first home win of the year.
The Spartans Chris Hirano (San Jose, Cali.) opened the scoring with his third goal of the season on the power play less than nine minutes into the game and, with that, sparked TWU to responsive win after falling 5-3 to the Eagles (2-2) Friday. The Spartans also got goals from Aaron Gruenhage (Abbotsford, B.C.), Andrew Wheeler (Maple Ridge, B.C.) and Cody Stephenson (Aldergrove, B.C.).
Eastern Washington goalie Jason Greenwell stopped 33 of the 37 shots he faced in the loss.
“We need a full 60-minute effort to earn wins and that’s what we got today,” said Spartans coach Barret Kropf, who got his first home win as the TWU bench boss. “It was good to see all four lines compete hard. In net, Harry battled hard and made the saves when we needed them. It was good having our captain Brad (Bakken, Langley) back in our lineup (who returned from a suspension dating back to an incident last year) and he brought stability to our back end.
“Overall, it was a full team effort and that’s what we’re going to need the rest of the season.”
After Hirano opened the scoring on a goalmouth scramble, Gruenhage, notched his first as a Spartan with a deft tip off a Micah Cockrill (Chilliwack, B.C.) point shot with 6:01 left it the first period. From there, TWU was off to the races. Outshooting the Eagles 13-6 in the first period, the Spartans set the tone for the game and never relinquished momentum.
In the second period, Wheeler scored his first in TWU blue and gold to give the Spartans a three-goal advantage. Mattias Schmitt (Surrey, B.C.) picked up the assist on the play.
The Spartans Stephenson rounded out the scoring on the power play with his third marker of the season with just over six minutes left in the third period. Both JP Villeneuve (Georgetown, Ont.) and Jake Harcoff (Surrey) had assists.
The Spartans are back on the ice Oct. 25-26 when they will host Victoria Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. Eastern Washington will play a pair of exhibition games Oct. 26-27 against Williston State.
Game Notes: The Spartans went two for four on the power play while EWU was zero for four. -TW-
