Trinity Western soccer forward Carlee O’Brien scored a hat trick in a 3-1 win over UBC on Saturday, making her Canada West Athlete of the Week for Sept. 22-24.
The fourth-year forward is a constant threat to opposing defenders, whose speed helped the unranked Spartans to a 3-1 win over the CIS #6 ranked UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday, a day after suffering a loss against top-ranked Victoria.
O’Brien leads Canada West in goal scoring with six, three clear of her closest competitors. O’Brien, majoring in Sport and Leisure Management, is an instrumental part of the Spartans’ attack and a significant reason that they have started the season 4-1-1, second to Alberta in Canada West conference play. “Carlee’s her pace and her ability to finish is so crucial to our young team,” said eight-year Head Coach Graham Roxburgh. “I have been impressed with her movement and her attacking runs. Her touch around the box has been very good so far this season,” he added.
The win over UBC was only the second time that TWU has beaten the T-Birds since entering the CIS in 2001. The last time that TWU beat UBC was the Spartans’ first game as members of Canada West in September 2001.
