FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Golden Bears Squeak Past Spartans
Foul shots were difference as Alberta tops TWU 78-76

LANGLEY, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University men’s basketball team controlled the outside of the court against the visiting University of Alberta Friday night at TWU. But the inside was where the game belonged to the Golden Bears as Alberta knocked off the home team 78-76. TWU hit 11 three point shots to Alberta’s five, but the Golden Bears shot 25 more foul shots then the Spartans (25-34 to 5-9).

The Golden Bears controlled the game for much of the first half. They quickly jumped out to a seven point lead, 18-11 four minutes into the contest. TWU cut the lead to one, 22-21 by the 13 minute mark. But every time the Spartans got close the Golden Bears would pull away. Alberta extended the lead back to seven points with a 6-0 run to lead 28-21 with 11 minutes remaining. The Spartans cut the lead to thee at the half 42-39 on a Brian Banman (3rd yr, guard, Kelowna) jumper.

Banman was the standout for both teams as he tallied 18 points in 14 first half minutes.

Six minutes into the second half the game was tied at 51-51. From that point on it would be a battle for control of the game. Both teams held leads as the clocked ticked on.

Then with nine minutes remaining Alberta got a burst and used a 8-2 run to build a six point lea, 71-65.

TWU climbed back into the game and with 22 seconds remaining with TWU trailing 76-74 the Spartans had two foul shots. TWU only made the one and were forced to foul. Alberta made one of two foul shots, but TWU turned the ball over and were once again forced to foul. The Golden Bears made their shots to extend the lead to four points with ten seconds remaining. David Bron (4th yr, forward, Surrey) made a jumper with two seconds remaining to make the final 78-76.

The win improves the Golden Bears to 6-3, while the loss drops the Spartans to 1-7.

Banman led all players with 26 points, five rebounds, and five steals for the Spartans, while Richard Bates (Sherwood Park, Alta.) led the Golden Bears with 18 points and 9 rebounds.

The two teams will match up again Saturday night at TWU. Game time is set for 8 pm.
