Spartans Run Past Bears
TWU beat Bears 89-80

LANGLEY, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University men’s basketball team used a  23-9 run midway through the second half  to blow open their game against the visiting University of Alberta Saturday night at TWU. Guard Luke Robinson (3rd yr, Ahousat) led the Spartans with 19 points as TWU improved to 2-7 with the 89-80 win. The loss drops Alberta to 6-4.

Forward Michael Brouwer (2nd yr, Nanaimo) was a first half force inside for the Spartans. Brouwer’s 10 points, two blocks and two rebounds helped lead the Spartan to a 39-37 first half lead.

Four minutes into the second half the Golden Bears had turned the game around and after a Richard Bates (Sherwood Park, Alta) jumper Alberta led 46-41.

Then the Spartans took control of the game. TWU used pressure defense and timely three point shooting to build an 14 point lead 71-57 with 7:10 remaining.

Alberta did their best to close the gap but they never got closer than seven points as TWU took the game 89-80.

Dean Whalen (Port Coquitlam) with 19 points led the Golden Bears. TWU had a balanced attack with five players in double digit scoring.

Next up for the Spartans is the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack. Game time on a special Thursday night tip-off is scheduled for 8 pm.

Game Notes: TWU was solid from the field shooting 53% (27-51), 50% (9-18) from behind the arch and 81% (26-32) from the foul line. Alberta finished by shooting 41% ( 26-63) from the field, 37% (11-29)  from behind the arch and 65% (17-26) from the foul line...the Bears outrebounded the Spartans 38-30...TWU had 20 turnovers, while Alberta had 14... Tonight’s win was the first time that the Spartans have beaten the University of Alberta. (1-11).
