Last Second Shot Drops Spartans
Laurentian hits three point shot with three seconds remaining to beat TWU 75-74

VANCOUVER –Paul Kovacs played the hero for the Voyageurs as Laurentian University defeated the Trinity Western University Spartans 75-74 Thursday night at UBC’s Accent Inn Classic Tournament. The first year guard from Barrie, ON hit a three point basket with three seconds remaining to thwart the Spartans comeback bid.

“We did not play with urgency until the final five minutes of the game,” said TWU head coach Stan Peters. “We are struggling with our flow right now and we are out of our rhythm. We need to be playing well right from the opening tip if we are to be successful. But there is something there that is not allowing us to do this.”

The Spartans, who had trailed by as many 11 points and by five points, 64-59 with less than five minutes remaining, took control of the game down the stretch. TWU’s defense gave the Spartans quality chances, while keeping the Voyageurs off the score sheet.

TWU used a 15-8 run to take a two point lead, 74-72 with 12 seconds remaining. Then Laurentian came down the floor and worked the ball around to find an open Kovacs on the left baseline.

The Spartans took the timeout to set up the last second shot, but Luke Robinson (Ahousat) three point attempt from just over half fell short as time expired.

The loss drops the Spartans to 0-2 at the tournament, while the Voyageurs are now even at 1-1.

The Spartans had a slow start to the game as the Voyageurs jumped out to an early 11 point lead 24-13 seven minutes into the contest. After a TWU timeout the Spartans picked up their defensive intensity and started to chip away at the Laurentian lead.

Five minutes after the timeout the Spartans had gone on a 15-5 run and after two foul shots by TrevorNerdahl (Caronport, SK) had closed to within one point, 29-28 of the Voyageurs.

The pace of the game continued to be up tempo, which allowed for both teams to make large scoring runs over short periods of time. Laurentian responded to the TWU run and quickly built their lead back to six points, 34-28 with seven minutes remaining.

TWU came back and hit seven straight points to take a 35-34 lead with 3:40 remaining.

The Voyageurs finished the half on a 9-4 run to go into the break with a 44-38 lead. Laurentians Ben Palmer (Kincardine, ON), who finished with 21 points, led all scorers with 19 first half points.

“In the first half we did not have our bodies in position to stop him. But in the second half we did not allow him to turn and we took him out of his comfort zone,” said Peters.

TWU came out strong to start the second half. Three straight baskets tied the game at 44-44 after two minutes of play.

Laurentian settled down and once again built their lead up to eight points, 57-49 with a 13-5 run. As was the case in the first half, TWU came storming back. And after a hoop and foul shot by Nils Dobszinsky (Port Townsend, WA) the Spartans had tied the game at 68-68 with 2:54 remaining.

After a missed Laurentian shot Nerdahl got a steal in the open court and went in for the breakaway basket to give the Spartans a 70-68 with 2:28 remaining.

Two foul shots by the Voyageurs Matt Brown (Hemlock, Mich.) tied the game 70-70.

Brian Banman (Kelowna) then came down and hit a deep three point basket to give TWU the 73-70 lead with just under a minute and a half remaining.

Laurentian’s Brody Bishop (Prince Rupert) was fouled inside the key on the Voyageurs next possession. He hit one of the two foul shots to cut the lead to two points, 73-71. TWU turned the ball over on their next possession, which gave Laurentian the opportunity to tie the game. Ben Palmer, who had been held to one point in the second half, hit one of two foul shots to make it a one point game, 73-72 with 55 seconds remaining.

After a missed three point shot by TWU’s Banman, Laurentian brought the ball down the floor looking to take the lead. But with 23 seconds remaining the Spartans Luke Robinson stole the ball at the top of the three point line and was fouled as he headed down court. Robinson hit one of two foul shots to build TWU’s lead back to two points, 74-72.

Brian Banman with 16 points, three assists, Jon Schmidt (Rosedale) with 13 points, four rebounds and Trevor Nerdahl with 13 points, four rebounds led the Spartans, while Ben Palmer with 21 points, five rebounds and Matt Brown with 12 points, led the Voyageurs.

Next up for the Spartans is the final game of the tournament against the York University Lions. Game time at UBC is scheduled for 3 pm. Next league game for the Spartans is on Friday, January 5 against the University of Victoria. Game time at TWU is set for 8 pm.
