Spartans Win in OT
TWU tops York 84-76 to finish UBC tournament with win

Vancouver –TWU’s Michael Brouwer (Nanaimo) scored saved his best for when it counted as the second year post scored six points while adding four rebounds in overtime to help give the Spartans an 84-76 win over the York University Lions Friday afternoon at UBC’s Accent Inn Classic Tournament. The Spartans improved to 1-2 in the tournament by outscoring the Lions (0-3) 14-6 in the five minute overtime frame.

“We challenged Michael in overtime to get us rebounds and down the stretch he was dominant inside and that is what we need from him,” said TWU head coach Stan Peters. “We did not have a good feeling after last night’s loss, so tonight our guys were determined to make sure that we were going to get this one tonight.”

The Spartans played better every game in the tournament and look to have shaken off the rust from the Christmas break. “Any time you try to play the game fast and you take time off it just takes longer to get back to being comfortable playing the game at that pace,” said Peters. “These three games have been awesome and we have gotten better every single game.”

York guard Tut Ruach sent the game into overtime with two foul shots with eight seconds remaining in the second half.

After losing on a last second shot Thursday night to Laurentian the Spartans did not give York any opportunities in the overtime period. TWU overpowered the Lions and used a 14-1 run to blow open the game.

The Spartans and the Lions matched each other for most of the first half. Each time one of the teams looked to take control of the game the other squad would catch up. After twenty minutes the Spartans found themselves with a slim two point lead 37-35 over the Lions.

Brian Banman (Kelowna) and Trevor Nerdahl (Caronport, SK) with nine points with nine points each led the Spartans in the first half, while Tut Ruach (Toronto) with nine points and three steals led the Lions

The Spartans came out flying to start the second half. They used a 10-0 run over the first two and a half minutes and after a David Bron (Surrey) three point basket had extended their lead to twelve points, 47-35.

But York, paced by Ruach scrambled back with six straight points to pull within six points, 47-41.

As was the case in the first half each team continued to take runs to in an attempt to gain control. This time it was the Spartans who after a David Bron turnaround bank shot had extended their lead to 54-41 with just over 13 minutes remaining in the second half.

The Lions kept pushing to stay in the game. Ruach got York back in the game as he sparked a 25-14 run to bring the Lions to within two trailing 68-66 with 1:45 remaining.

With 1:33 left, Luke Robinson (Ahousat) was then fouled on a behind the back move and made both to give TWU a 70-66 lead

York’s Amde Evans then hit a runner in the lane to bring the Lions to within two, 70-68 with 48 seconds remaining to give Tut Ruach the opportunity to send the game into overtime.

Jon Schmidt (Rosedale) got the Spartans going in overtime with a pull up jumper to put TWU up 72-70. A minute later Brian Banman made it 74-70 by making two foul shots.

York’s Ruach gave the Lions momentary hope by hitting one of two foul shots, 74-71. But that was it for the Lions as Brouwer helped the Spartans to go on 10-0 run and seal the win. Ruach made two baskets in the final 30 seconds to make the final 84-76.

York’s Tut Ruach led all players with 28 points, nine assists, eight steals and six rebounds. While led by Brian Banman with 16 points and Luke Robinson with 15 points TWU had five players in double digits in scoring.

Next up for the Spartans is a Canada West league game against the University of Victoria on Saturday, January 7. Game time at TWU is scheduled for 8 pm.
