#6 Victoria overcomes 15 point deficit, but TWU’s Robinson hits game winner.

LANGLEY, British Columbia
- Luke Robinson banked a twelve foot runner with six seconds remaining to give Trinity Western a 63-62 win over the sixth ranked University of Victoria Saturday night at TWU. The win extends the Spartans conference win streak to four games and improves their record to 5-7. The loss drops the Vikes to 8-3.

“As the guys learn and get more comfortable with each other and believe in what we are doing, we will be able to compete with the top teams in our division and in Canada,” said TWU Head Coach Stan Peters. “I think that we are right in the mix, it’s just a matter of maturity and believing. Tonight is a great win for us.”

Victoria opened the scoring and were even at seven after five minutes of play but it was at that point that the Spartans turned up the heat in front of the packed house at the David E. Enarson Gymnasium in Langley. Over the span of the next six minutes, Trinity Western would outscore the Vikes 16-3 and step out to a large thirteen point lead.

The Spartan offense continued to roll and with just over three minutes to play, increased the spread to the largest of the game, fifteen points, with the score 30-15.

Victoria was able to cut the margin slightly before the half and went into the break down 12 points, 36-24.

The Vikes hit early to start the second half and within minutes, had cut the lead to just six points, 36-30.

The Spartans up tempo style had allowed TWU to build its lead, but in the second half Victoria gradually slowed the pace and cut into the Spartans lead. Over the final ten minutes, the Vikes turned a thirteen point deficit, 53-40 into a one point lead when with 12 seconds to play; Steve Moore (Victoria) gave Victoria their first lead since the opening minutes when they were up 7-5. Moore hit a jumper from inside arc to slide the Vikes up by one with the score 62-61. “Give Victoria lots of credit. They forced there tempo on us over the final ten minutes and that is how they got back in the game,” said Peters.

The Spartans did not call a timeout after the basket; instead they ran the ball up the floor put the game into the hands of Luke Robinson (Ahousat, B.C.). With six seconds on the clock Robinson drove the right side of the lane and nailed a 12-foot jumper off the glass and in, to put the Spartans up 63-62.

Victoria would get a shot off at the buzzer but it bounced harmlessly off the backboard and to the floor, giving Trinity Western their fifth victory of the season.

TWU captain, Brian Banman (Kelowna) with 18 points, and Jon Schmidt (Rosedale) with 13 points led the way for the Spartans, while Chris Trumpy with 16 points and Brandon Ellis with 13 points led the way for the Vikes.

Next up for the Spartans is the University of Lethbridge on Friday January 13 and Saturday, January 14. Both games are scheduled to tip-off at 8 pm.
