Spartans Stun Pronghorns with Comeback
TWU overcomes 17 deficit to take out Lethbridge

LANGLEY, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University men’s basketball team were down but not out Friday night against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. The visitors from Alberta started the game with an 11-0 run as they built a 17 point first half lead. But it wasn’t enough as the Spartans used a 29-6 run midway through the second half to come from behind and defeat the Pronghorns 77-70. The win gives the Spartans a five game winning streak and moves them to 6-7 in Canada West, while the loss drops the Pronghorns to 4-7.

Trevor Nerdahl (22 points) had eight straight to give TWU its first lead of the game, 53-52, midway through the second half. While Nerdahl (Caronport, Sask) was scoring Luke Robinson (Ahousat) was energizing the Spartan fans by making perfect passes, timely steals and by diving for loose balls. The Spartans’ up-tempo style took its toll on the Pronghorns. After shooting 80% from the field in the first ten minutes Lethbridge could only hit 24% in the second half.

“The whole problem in the first half is that we were not creating easy hoops, we just weren’t in a good flow,” said TWU Head Coach Stan Peters. “Once again we had twelve guys playing hard and our conditioning paid off for us in the second half. I told our guys that we have done more conditioning than anybody else, so 12 points is nothing, but it has to come from gut.”

After trailing by 17 points ten minutes into the game the Spartans cut the lead to 12 points at the half, 42-30.

Lethbridge extended the lead back to 14 points, 49-35 four minutes into the second half. TWU then went on its 29-6 run to take a ten point lead 68-58 with seven minutes remaining in the game.  Lethbridge got to with in four points, 72-68 with a minute remaining, but it was as close as the Pronghorns would get.

In addition to Nerdahl and Robinson, TWU had strong performances from Michael Brouwer (Nanaimo) with 13 points and six rebounds and Jon Schmidt (Rosedale) with ten points and six assists. “Luke is instant energy off the bench he reads the floor so well that when he comes in he makes a difference,” said Peters. “Brouwer was a huge difference for us in the second half, he controlled the boards and got good baskets.”

The Pronghorns’ Tim Whitehead (Lethbridge, Alta.) led all scorers with 25 points. Lethbridges’ Todd McClenaghan (Stirling, Alta.) finished with a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The two teams will match up again Saturday night. Game time at TWU is set for 8 pm. The game will be broadcasted live on TWU’s Spartan Web Radio at www.spartanwebradio.ca.

Game notes: TWU outrebounded Lethbridge 39-36 and had the edge in free throws shooting 23-34 to the Pronghorns 14-29...Lethbridge shot 60% (6-10) from the three point line in the first half and 12% (2-16) in the second half...
