Spartans Hit Century Mark
TWU battles back to extend streak to six games

LANGLEY, British Columbia - Much to the chagrin of Trinity Western University Head Coach Stan Peters the Spartans’ men’s basketball team is making a habit of using second half rally’s to win games. Tonight’s game against the visiting University of Lethbridge Pronghorns was no different. Trailing 51-46 at the half the Spartans used a 31-10 run at the start of the second half to take control of the game and cruise to a 100-82 win.

“I have to figure out some way to get rid of the first half lulls,” said TWU Head Coach Stan Peters. “With the young group of guys that we have we are relaxing a little too much at the start. Right now we are waiting for the first ten minutes to determine what kind of performance we are going to need to win, rather than being ready to go from the opening tip. We are going to have to do a better job with our starters of establishing our defensive presence.”

The Spartans started the season 1-7, but after winning the last six games they are now back at .500 (7-7) for the first time this season. The loss drops the Pronghorns to 4-8. “We knew that if we were going to do something this season that we needed to make a push during this home stretch,” said Peters. “I’m really excited that we were able to get it done.”

TWU used strong defensive pressure and a balanced attack to take tonight’s contest. The Spartans had five players hit double digits in scoring. Trevor Nerdahl (Caronport, Sask.) with 18 points, Brian Banman (Kelowna) with 17 points and Michael Brouwer (Naniamo) with 16 points and eight rebounds led the way for the Spartans, while Tim Whitehead with 26 points led the way for the Pronghorns. “Brouwer dominated the boards in the second half. Every loose ball that was out there he got his hands on,” said Peters.

The loss drops Lethbridge to 4-8.

Next up for the Spartans is in Winnipeg to battle the University of Manitoba on Friday, January 20 and Saturday, January 21. Game times against the Bisons are set for 8 pm.

Game notes: the Spartans shot a solid 50% (16-32) in the first half, but were “on fire” in the second half, shooting 62.5% (20-32)...the Pronghorns shot 37% (29-78) for the game...TWU controlled the boards, out-rebounding Lethbridge 45-37...the 100 points is the second time in the school’s CIS history that they have cracked the century mark. The other was a 102-74 win against Thompson Rivers University on December 2, 2005...
