FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SEVEN AND COUNTING
TWU makes it seven wins in a row with second half offensive explosion in 81-67 win over Manitoba

WINNIPEG - The Trinity Western University men’s basketball team picked the perfect time to get their first road win in nearly two years. The Spartans used a 54 point second half offensive explosion to come from behind to defeat the University of Manitoba 81-67 Friday night in Winnipeg. The victory extends TWU’s winning streak to seven games and puts the Spartans over .500 (8-7) for the first time in two year, while the loss drops the Bisons to 4-9. TWU’s last Canada West league road win was an 85-77 win over the Simon Fraser University Clan on February 14, 2004.

“We had a very slow start again, but we came out like gang busters in the second half and just wore them down,” said TWU Head Coach Stan Peters. “It’s a great time to get a road win. Our guys really gutted it out and had a tremendous effort in the second half.”

The first half started evenly, with the Spartans holding an 18-17 lead eight minutes into the game. Then the home team looked to take control of the game. Manitoba outplayed the visitors from Langley, B.C. for the next seven minutes as the Bisons used a 15-1 run to take a 32-19 lead with five minutes remaining in the half. The Spartans were able to finish the half strong and used an 8-4 run to go into the break trailing 36-27.

Manitoba started the second half strong and with five minutes gone had built their lead back up to double digits, leading 43-33. Trailing by double digits in the second half is nothing new for the Spartans and neither is overcoming the deficit. Three minutes is all it took for the Spartans to go on a 13-2 run and take a 46-45 lead with just over 12 minutes remaining.

With the outcome still in the balance the two teams battled back and forth for control of the game, but neither team was able to get the lead for long as the Spartans and Bison remained tied at 61 with 7:30 remaining. That’s when the Spartans ran away from the Bisons. TWU finished the game with a 20-5 run to take the game 81-67.

Guard Luke Robinson (third year, Ahousat, B.C.) with 19 points and Michael Brouwer (Nanaimo, B.C.) with 14 points in 18 minutes led the Spartans, while former Spartan Jon Lundgren (Winnipeg) led the Bisons with 15 points. “Luke and Michael had exceptional games for us tonight,” commented Peters.

The two teams play again tomorrow night with tip-off set for 8 pm in Winnipeg.

Game Notes: TWU shot 57% (20-35) from the field in the second half...Manitoba finished with 21 turnovers to TWU’s 15...the Bisons had the edge in rebounding 36-34...both teams finished 6-20 from behind the three point line...In their last three games the Spartans have outscored their opponents 155-90 in the second half... TWU’s seven game league winning streak breaks the teams previous record of six set in the 2003-04 season....Tonight's win combined with Thompson Rivers (2-12) 107-87 loss to UBC clinches a post season berth for the Spartans...
