SPARTANS ON A RUN
TWU Sweeps Manitoba with 97-89 win, extends winning streak to eight games

WINNIPEG – The up-tempo style of the Trinity Western University men’s basketball team continues to pay dividends as the Spartans once again were able to come-from-behind to earn the win. Tonight TWU overcame nine point second half deficit to defeat the University of Manitoba Bisons 97-89 Saturday night in Winnipeg. The win gives the Spartans the weekend sweep and extends their league winning streak to a school best eight games. It has been over two years since the Spartans have swept a team on the road. The last time TWU swept on the road was at UBC on Jan 10-11, 2004.

“We had a good start offensively but we just had our trouble on the defensive end of the floor. We gave up to many offensive rebounds and allowed Manitoba to get into the lane far too easily,” said TWU Head Coach Stan Peters. “But in the second half we were able to make some corrections, we tighten things up defensively and we took it right at them at the other end of the floor. Now we just have to keep things going and get ready for the playoffs.”

The two teams matched each other for most of the first half. Then with three and a half minutes remaining and the Spartans up one, 39-38 the Bisons got on a roll. Manitoba went on a 13-2 run and  looked like they would have a ten point margin going into the break, but a Brian Banman three point basket with eight seconds remaining made the half time score 51-44 for the Bisons.

Two minutes into the second half the Bisons had extended their lead to nine points. Then TWU started to roll. The Spartans used a 29-8 run to turn a nine point deficit, 55-46 into a twelve point lead 75-63 with just under ten minutes remaining. The Bisons made a few dents in the score but were unable to gain any ground and with five minutes remaining TWU held a 13 point lead 85-72.

Then Manitoba made a serious charge and after outscoring TWU 18-5 the Bisons only trailed the Spartans by five points, 90-85 with less than two minutes remaining in the game. It was as close as the Manitoba would get tonight as TWU went 5-6 from the foul line to close out the 97-89 win.

The win improves the Spartans to 9-7, while the loss drops the Bisons to 4-10.

Guard Brian Banman (Kelowna) with 24 points, six assists and six rebounds led the Spartans, while Jon Lundgren with 21 points and seven rebounds led the Bisons.

The Spartans now head to Simon Fraser University for their final road games of the season. The first game is a special night with a Thursday night 7 pm tip-off. The game can be heard live on MOJO AM 730. The second game is scheduled for an 8 pm tip-off on Friday night.

Game Notes: TWU who shot 41% (16-39) in the first half, shot 50% from the field (17-34) and the three point line (6-12) in the second half, while the Bisons cooled off from 51% (18-35) in the first half to 32% (15-46) in the second half...Both teams went 20-27 from the foul line... TWU had five players hit double-digits in scoring, while Manitoba had four...
