TWU’s Luke Robinson hits career mark in double OT thriller

BURNABY, British Columbia - Guard Luke Robinson (Ahousat) had a TWU career best 28 points as the Trinity Western University men’s basketball team outlasted Simon Fraser University 104-102 in double overtime Thursday night in Burnaby, B.C. The 10-7 Spartans needed to set school records for points in a game and longest game to overcome the 3-12 Clan and improve their TWU record setting winning streak to nine games.

“We didn’t play well but SFU did an awesome job getting ready for us,” said TWU Head Coach Stan Peters. “We just gutted out a great win tonight.”

The Spartans had a shot at winning in regulation, but Brian Banman’s (Kelowna) three point shot missed as the buzzer sounded with the two teams tied at 82-82.

In the first overtime the Clan jumped out to a five point lead 90-85 and looked to have the game well in hand. SFU maintained a four point lead, 93-89 with less than a minute remaining. Then TWU’s David Bron (Surrey) converted the three point play to make it 93-92 with 46 seconds left in the overtime. The Spartans then got the turnover that they needed, but were unable to convert and turned the ball back over to the Clan with 8 seconds remaining. TWU quickly fouled SFU’s Raj Mander. Mander made one of two shots to give SFU a 94-92 lead. TWU’s Robinson then sprinted down the floor and was fouled going to the basket with 2 seconds remaining. Robinson made both to send the game into the second overtime.

The second overtime was all Luke Robinson for the Spartans. The third year guard scored all of the Spartans’ points in the period. Every time SFU took the lead Robinson would hit a jumper or get to the foul line to score. After making four straight foul shots Robinson hit a jumper in the lane to give TWU the 102-98 lead with 1:20 remaining. Sean Burke hit the shot for the Clan to make it 102-100. Then Robinson came back and made one of two foul shots with 39 seconds remaining. SFU’s Raj Mander then hit both foul shots, after he was fouled inside, to make it 103-102 for TWU. The Spartans inbounded the ball to Robinson, who was immediately fouled. Robinson once again made one of two to give TWU a 104-102 lead. SFU’s Nolan Holmes had a shot to tie with less than ten seconds but he missed the mark. TWU’s Jason Keegstra got the rebound and was fouled to stop the clock. After Burke was called for a foul, Jason Keegstra missed two free throws and with eight seconds left the Clan had another opportunity to tie. Unfortunately SFU was unable to generate a shot, as a turnover at the TWU end caused time to run out on the Clan.

TWU’s Brian Banman scored 26 points before fouling out in the second overtime. Joseph Vroom (Abbotsford) and David Bron each scored ten points for the Spartans. Bron and Vroom were the leading rebounders for Trinity Western, with Bron picking up nine boards and Vroom collecting eight.

Nolan Holmes (Victoria) and Emmy Unaegbu (Port Coquitlam) each recorded double-doubles for the Clan, both closing the game with 22 points and 15 rebounds each. SFU had five players in double figures for scoring, with Raj Mander (Coquitlam) netting 14 points and Aaron Christensen (Langley) adding 12.

The game was carried on MOJO Sports Radio 730 AM, and was the first double overtime game in the history of MOJO’s Canada West broadcasts. The two teams will rematch tomorrow night after the TWU and SFU women’s teams play at 6:15. Game time is scheduled for 8:15.

Spartan Web Radio, along with TWU Sports Information and TWU Athletic Department, is proud to announce that for the first time in school history Spartans Basketball will be broadcasted beyond the walls of the David E. Enarson Gymnasium. On January 27th, the Spartans basketball teams travel to Burnaby to battle division rivals Simon Fraser University Clan.

Game Notes: TWU shot 50% (35-70) from the field, while SFU shot 45% (32-71)... the Clan had the edge in rebounding 43-38...TWU was 27-36 from the foul line, while SFU was 32-44...the Spartans were cold from the outside shooting only 26% (7-26) from behind the three point line...the Clan finished shooting 28% (6-21)...TWU’s last league loss was on November 11, a 78-76 loss to the University of Alberta Golden Bears...
