Comeback Falls Short
TWU winning streak comes to an end against SFU

BURNABY, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University men’s basketball team saw their nine game winning streak come to a halt Friday night on Burnaby Mountain.  The Spartans made a valiant comeback effort but they fell short as TWU (10-8) dropped the contest 77-74 to the Simon Fraser University Clan (4-12).

In the last two minutes, the Clan shot 8-for-16 from the free throw line before Sean Burke (North Vancouver) was able to go 4-for-4 on the Clan’s final two trips. The Spartans seemingly scored two points for every successful Clan free throw during that porous exchange, and closed the gap to four (75-71) with ten seconds remaining. A three-pointer by Brian Banman put TWU within one point with 5.6 second on the clock. After Burke was fouled on the inbound and the rookie was able to hit two of his four aforementioned free throws, Luke Robinson (Ahousat), the double overtime hero from the night before, had one last opportunity for the Spartans. Taking the inbound pass and driving the length of the court, Robinson jacked a three and watched as it banked off the backboard and rimmed out to the delight of the home crowd.

The Spartans Brian Banman (Kelowna) was the game’s leading scorer, netting 25 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Robinson added 16 points for the Spartans, and Jon Schmidt (Rosedale) scored ten points for TWU.

Emmy Unaegbu finished the game as the leading scorer for the Clan, closing out the contest with 23 points and eight rebounds. Kevin Shaw closed the game 4-for-6 from the three-point line, netting 14 total points.

The game featured 57 personal fouls as the teams played for nearly two hours and thirty minutes. The Spartans were held scoreless for the first five minutes of the game; their first basket came with 14:15 remaining in the first half when Taylor Glass (Calgary, AB) hit a lay-up to make the score 11-2 for SFU. TWU’s bench scored 28 points compared to SFU’s two from the bench. SFU’s Aaron Christensen (Langley) missed the game with an ankle injury and is questionable for the remainder of the season, while TWU was without the services of injured guard Trevor Nerdahl (Caronport, Sask.) and forward Nils Dobszinsky (Port Townsend, Wash.).

The Spartans now have a week off before finishing off the regular season against the University of British Columbia on Thursday, February 9 and Saturday, February 11.
