Thunderbirds Still Perfect
TWU’s efforts to spoil UBC’s 20-0 season come up just short.

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University men’s basketball team did everything they could to halt the number one ranked University of British Columbia’s winning streak at 19 games Saturday night at a packed David E. Enarson gym. But the Thunderbirds earned their place in the history books as a hard fought 92-83 win gave UBC the perfect conference season at 20-0. The loss drops the Spartans back to 10-10.

It is the second perfect season in UBC’s history. The 1969-70 T-Birds went 16-0 in conference before winning the national title. Only one other team, the 1979-80 UVic Vikes, has pulled off the 20-0 mark in Canada West play.

The Spartans matched the T-Birds to the nine minute mark of the first half. Then with UBC up 23-22 the Thunderbirds exploded with a 25-9 run over the next eight minutes to take a 48-31 lead with 2:30 remaining in the half. The Spartans battled back to trail 50-40 with thirty seconds remaining. But UBC’s Pasha Bains hit a long three to give the T-Birds a 53-40 lead at the break.

UBC continued their strong play in the second half and built their lead to 18 points, 75-57 with less than 11 minutes remaining in the game. The Spartans cut into the lead slightly over the next six minutes, trailing 82-68 with 4:24 remaining.

TWU cut the lead to ten points, 84-74 with 2:16 remaining. Then with the capacity crowd behind them the Spartans put pressure on UBC and forced a turnover or sent a Thunderbird player to the foul line to stop UBC from running out the clock and give TWU a chance to cut into the lead. The strategy worked. Two minutes later the Spartans had cut the T-bird lead to four points, 87-83 with 40 seconds remaining. But the Spartans would not find the bottom of the basket again as closed out the game 92-83.

Brian Banman with 18 points and David Bron with 14 points and 12 rebounds led the Spartans, while Pasha Bains with 22 points and nine assists and Ryder McKeown with 16 points and 12 rebounds led the Thunderbirds.

TWU now travels to Victoria for the Pacific Division semifinal against the University of Victoria Vikes. The best of three series goes Friday, Saturday at 8 p.m. and if necessary Sunday at 3 p.m.

UBC will host the other Pacific Division semifinal against the Simon Fraser University Clan. The best of three series goes Friday, Saturday at 8 p.m. and if necessary Sunday at 4 p.m.
