Spartans Fall on the Island
Victoria take 1-0 series lead over TWU

VICTORIA, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University men’s basketball team opened their postseason with a 75-59 loss to the University of Victoria Friday night in Victoria, B.C. The Spartans battled the Vikes for most of the game but foul trouble and a hot shooting Vikes squad down the stretch proved to be the difference as Victoria takes a 1-0 series lead in the best of three Pacific Division semi final.

The game opened with Trinity Western taking it to the Vikes with an 8-2 opening run due to some excellent defensive pressure. The Spartans put a lock and key on the inside passage to the Vikes basket, which enabled them to take this early six-point lead.

Enter Jacob Doerksen (1st year, Abbotsford, B.C.), who scored nine points in two minutes for the Vikes in a 13-2 run. This included a superb three-ball from the top of the arc. This run ending with six minutes to play in the half and the score at 15-10.

Both teams were shooting poorly as both the Spartans and the Vikes shooting below 40% from the field. Trinity Western then scored three consecutive baskets in 30 seconds to bring the score to 22-19 with 3:40 to play in the half.

A huge three ball from the top left corner of the arc by Brandon Ellis (4th year, Campbell River, B.C.) started a small 7-0 run for the Vikes. Included in this scoring burst was a huge dunk by 2nd year forward Tyler Hass (Victoria). Hass cut in behind the Trinity Western defense on the left side to slam down a basket that brought the crowd to life and lifting the score to 26-22.

After another good basket from beyond the perimeter by the Spartans' Luke Robinson (3rd year, Ahousat, B.C.), the Vikes closed out the half with some near perfect free-throw shooting which left the score at 32-25 at the half-time break.

With neither team gaining the ascendancy in the second frame the score ambled to 46-38 with 12 minutes to play. This is where Doerksen stepped it up again hitting another of his three’s for the Vikes from the top of the key taking the score to 49-38.

Again Victoria maintained their advantage of 11 points until, Brian Banman (3rd year, Kelowna, B.C.) re-entered the game with four fouls. Banman scored, six points in a 9-2 run for the Spartans before fouling out with 1:51 to play and the score at 66-59.

This extinguished any hope of a Spartan revival as the UVic closed the game out with a 10-0 run. Trumpy showed the way with a huge second half as he showed class and skill driving to the basket at every opportunity to score 18 of his 20 points in the second frame alone.

UVic and Trinity Western will return to McKinnon Gym tomorrow night for game two of the Pacific Division Semi-final series, tip-off is at 8:00PM. Game three (if necessary) on Sunday at 3PM. All games are at UVic's McKinnon Gymnasium.
