Banman's Heroics Lead Spartans To Win Over Vikes
Third year guard hits 33 points to force game three

VICTORIA, British Columbia – Brian Banman (3rd Year, Kelowna) and his heroics was the difference tonight as the Trinity Western University Spartans evened up the best-of-three Canada West Pacific Division semi-final at one, with an 83-80 victory over the University of Victoria Vikes.

“Brian wanted this game so bad, he forced the play a little in the first half, but I was really pleases with the way that he let the game come to him in the second half,” said TWU head coach Stan Peters.

Banman set the stage in the early going, hitting two three's for six of his game-high 33 points, as the Spartans rolled out to an early 8-3 lead. The hectic pace kept up and just six minutes in Trinity Western was up by 11, 19-8.

The Vikes struggled early against the full-court pressure and the hot shooting Langley-side continued to put points up.

The sizzling three-point shooting continued throughout the half, as both teams hit for a combined ten in the first ten and a half minutes alone.

Trinity Western would get out to a lead of sixteen points, their largest of the half but back-to-back baskets and two free throws chopped that margin to ten with just under eight minutes to play.

The momentum began to shift from there as UVic's Chris Trumpy (5th Year, Victoria) made a deuce that was immediately followed up by a steal and bucket by Tyler Hass (2nd Year, Victoria) leaving Victoria down by seven.

Hass would lift the large McKinnon Gym crowd out of their seats moments later, slamming down a monster jam to cut the lead to three, 37-34.

With under three minutes to play, UVic had come all the way back, erasing the 16-point deficit and were up a single point, 39-38. The teams traded baskets in the waning minutes and Trinity Western would hold the edge at the half, up three, 43-40.

Trinity Western continued with their press to start the second but the Vikes were able to find a crack in the Spartans defensive armor.

UVic began to creep out front with under eight to play, holding a slight lead of eight points.

The Spartans marched back using a Luke Robinson (3rd year, Ahousat, B.C.) jumper and Banman's fifth 3-pointer of the game to cut the score to 71-65 with under six minutes to play.

With the clock ticking, Robinson had a great opportunity to chop more points off the lead after being fouled on a 3-point attempt but Robinson, who shoots 83% from the line, uncharacteristically missed on all three attempts, leaving the Vikes with a margin of two. Robinson would redeem himself before the buzzer, going to the line four times. On the second set of two he hit both, putting Trinity Western up three.

Victoria would get a shot to tie with three seconds to play with Brandon Ellis shooting for a three. The shot did not drop but he was fouled and went to the line. Ellis would miss the first, hit the second and need to rim the ball to give UVic a chance to pick up the rebound. Unfortunately balled hit all glass and possession was awarded to the Spartans. With the ball, Trinity Western would hold on to an 83-80 victory.

“Even though we were down ten our guys could see that the momentum was starting to swing our way,” said Peters. “We just kept pushing the ball at them and we eventually wore them down.”

With the win TWU evened the series at one game a piece. The deciding third game will be played Sunday afternoon at McKinnon Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 3pm.
