Vikes Triumph over Spartans
Victoria advances to Pacific Division Final

VICTORIA, British Columbia – It took forty hard-fought minutes but the University of Victoria Vikes men's basketball team prevailed, winning game three by a score of 91-78 over the Trinity Western University Spartans this afternoon at UVic's McKinnon Gymnasium.

Chris Trumpy (5th Year, Victoria) got the Vikes started on the right foot, hitting a two and three in the first minute to get UVic out front early.

Victoria was able to beat the Trinity Western press and work the ball inside to Graeme Bollinger (4th Year, Lac La Biche, Alta.) for early success  Bollinger hit for 12 first half points.

The Vikes were able to get out to a small lead of eight midway through the firs t but the Spartans used back-to-back 3-pointers by Saturday night's star Brian Banman (3rd year, Kelowna, B.C.) and Luke Robinson (3rd Year, Ahousat, B.C.) to cut the lead back to just two, 23-21.

Trinity Western's pressure defense was able to shut down the Vikes shooting from the field for nearly four and a half minutes closing the gap to three points.  Steve Moore stepped up and ended that dubious streak, hitting a two, taking the score to 30-25.

Victoria would get their largest lead of the first-nine points-with a minute and forty-five seconds to play.  That was a margin they would hold twice and that they would take into the break with the score at 45-36.

With the pace of play already outstanding, both sides found the gas to step it up even more to begin the second.  The teams went end-to-end exchanging baskets for the initial five minutes.  It was at that point that the game began to turn in Victoria's favour.

Rookie-of-the- Year candidate Jacob Doerksen (1st Year, Abbotsford, B.C.) made a big steal and moved the ball up the floor to Matt Kuzminski (2nd Year, Nanaimo, B.C.)  who then dished back to Doerksen who finished with the hoop while getting fouled.  He would hit his free throw to give the Vikes a 13-point lead, 60-47.

The largest lead of the game for Victoria would come with eleven minutes and thirty to play as UVic stretched the margin to a 15-point gap.

The aggressive, no quit attitude began to pay off for the Spartans as their defense again shut down the Victoria shooters for close to four and a half minutes.  Fourth year guard David Bron (Surrey, B.C.) was able to chop the lead back to seven with his bucket but that was as close as Trinity Western would come.

The exclamation point for the game came with just forty seconds to play as sophomore Tyler Hass threw down a thundering jam, bringing everyone out of their seats.  That would be the last basket o f the game as the Vikes workhorses scraped their way to an impressive 91-78 victory.

The win gave Victoria the best-of-three series edge and the right to face the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds in the Pacific Division final next week at War Memorial Gymnasium.
