SPARTANS AND VIKES BATTLE IN LANGLEY EVENTS CENTRE BASKETBALL SEASON OPENER

LANGLEY, British Columbia
- The Trinity Western University Spartans are set to take on the University of Victoria Vikes in this weekend in two basketball contests, Fri. at 8 p.m. and Sat. at 7 p.m. in the Spartans basketball home openers at the Langley Events Centre.  The Spartans went 2-0 last weekend with a pair of road wins against Brandon (83-63) and Regina (81-74).  The Vikes are also coming into tonight’s game with a pair of wins last weekend as they downed the Alberta (74-66) and Saskatchewan (82-54). The last time these two teams met was in last year’s Pacific Division semi-final, which the Spartans took two games to one at TWU.

The weekends contests will be broadcast live on the web on SpartansTV at gospartans.ca.

VICTORIA
Last week the Vikes were led by fifth year guard Cyril Indome (Winnipeg) who averaged 19 points over the weekend.  Indome was also very successful from deep making 8 of 14 from beyond the arc.  Victoria was able to win the battle of the boards in both games by an average of 8.5 rebounds per game.  Third year forward Michael Berg (Burnaby B.C.) was the lead the way on the glass for the Vikes recording 22 rebounds over two games.

Offence
Victoria comes in with a very balanced team.  They sit seventh in scoring for Canada West play averaging 77 points per game.  Leading the way for the Vikes is fifth year guard Cyril Indome (Winnipeg) is averaging 20.3 points per game.  Also contributing are year fourth year guard Jeff Cullen (Victoria) who is averaging 11.0 points per game, and third year guard Zac Andrus (Vashon Island, Wash.) who is averaging 9.7 points per game and four assists per game

Defence
Victoria has the fourth best defensive scoring average so far in Canada West play limiting their opponents to just 66 points per game.  The Vikes rank eleventh in defensive rebounding averaging 25.3 defensive rebounds per game.  Their defense has also contributed to a +3.33 turnover so far this season. Cullen and Andrus lead the Vikes with 4 steals apiece while fourth year forward Wendell Thomas (Kelowna, B.C.) leads the team with 2 blocks.


SPARTANS
Last week the Spartans went on the road picking up a pair of tough wins against the Brandon Bobcats and the Regina Cougars.  Leadng the way against Brandon was fourth year forward Jacob Doerksen (Abbotsford, B.C.) who had 25 points and 12 rebounds.  Against Regina it was fellow forward fourth year Lance Verhoeff (Calgary) who finished with 22 points and 7 rebounds.  On the glass it was fourth year forward Tyrell Mara (White Rock, B.C.) who finished the weekend collecting 22 rebounds

Offence
The Spartans offence currently ranks thirteenth in Canada West averaging 69.3 point per game.  The Spartans have a balanced offense with two players averaging 14.3 points per game.  They are fourth year forward Jacob Doerksen (Abbotsford BC) and third year guard Calvin Westbrook (Courtenay, B.C.).  Also contributing offensively are fifth year guard Louis Hurd (Spokane, Wash.) and Verhoeff who average 12.0 and 10.7 points per game respectively.  Mara leads the Spartan on the offensive glass pulling down 11 offensive rebounds so far this season.

Defence
The Spartan have the fifth best defense in Canada West play thus far holding their opponents to 69.3 points per game.  They rank fifth in defensive rebounding pulling down an average of 27 rebounds per game.  The strong play on the boards has given them a +5 rebounding margin through three games.  Fourth year forward Jason Keegstra (Vernon B.C.) leads the team with two blocks while Doerksen leads the team with six steals.
