SPARTANS HOST WOLFPACK


LANGLEY, British Columbia
– This weekend the Trinity Western University men’s basketball team welcomes the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack for their first visit to the Langley Events Centre. The weekend’s two game series will feature two of the top rebounding teams and the top rebounders in Canada West in what will most likely be a war on the boards to determine the winner of the weekend series.

The WolfPack have two of the top rebounders in the Canada West in Greg Stewart (4th year, forward, Kamloops, BC) and Jeff Friesen (5 th year, forward, Duncan, BC).  The Spartans counter with Tyrell Mara (4th year, forward, White Rock, BC) and Jacob Doerksen (4th year, forward, Abbotsford, BC).

The 8-5 Spartans need wins this weekend to stay ahead of fourth place Fraser Valley at 8-6 and fifth place Victoria at 7-6.The WolfPack sit at 2-12 and are out of the post season picture, but are in the position of determining the final post season spots from the Pacific Division as they finish with games against TWU and Simon Fraser.

The Spartans are led by 2009 CIS Player of the Year and most recently announced 2009 Sport BC University Athlete of the Year finalist fourth year forward Jacob Doerksen. Doerksen is second in Canada West in scoring at 21.4 points per game, ninth in rebounding with 7.7 rebounds per game and fourth in field goal percentage at 54.7 percent, fourth year forward Tyrell Mara who is averaging 9.5 points per game, while sitting third in Canada West in rebounding at 9.2 rebounds per game, 12th in assists at 3.5 per game and ninth in steals at two per game, Calvin Westbrook who is averaging 12.5 points per game and 4.6 rebounds per game and Lance Verhoeff who is averaging 9.3 points per game and is 17th in rebounding with 6.5 rebounds per game.

As a team Trinity Western is fourth in the conference in scoring with 78.2 points per game, fourth in scoring defence at 72.2 points per game, fourth in scoring margin at plus six, 11th in free throw percentage at 66.1 percent, second in field goal percentage at 44.2, 12th in three point field goal percentage at 31.6, first in rebounding at 44.5 rebounds per game and first in defensive rebounding allowing only 32.3 rebounds per game.

The WolfPack are led by post Greg Stewart who leads Canada West in rebounding at 11.5 rebounds per game and blocked shots at 2.8 blocks per game, third in field goal percentage at 54.9 percent and is 11th in scoring at 15.3 points per game, forward Jeff Friesen who is sixth in CW in rebounding at 7.9 rebounds per game,15th in scoring at 14 points per game, 10th in blocked shots at 0.9 blocks per game and eighth in free throw percentage at 81.5 percent and point guard Steve Garvey who is ninth in Canada West in scoring at 15.8 points per game.

Thompson Rivers is ninth in scoring at 75.4 points per game, 12th in defence allowing 82.9 points per game, seventh in free throw percentage at 68.8 percent, seventh in field goal percent at 42 percent, sixth in three point percentage at 35 percent, third in rebounding at 42.4 rebounds per game, 12th in rebounds allowed at 43.9 rebounds per game, second in blocked shots at 4.2 blocks per game, 11th in assists at 12 assists per game and last in steals with 5.4 steals per game.
