SPARTANS DOERKSEN EARNS CIS HONOURS
OTTAWA- Trinity Western basketball player Jacob Doerksen and Brock hockey player Jessica Fickel are the BlackBerry Canadian Interuniversity Sport female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Dec. 5, 2010. These are the final selections of the fall.
Doerksen, a fifth-year business administration student from Abbotsford, B.C., racked up 57 points in a pair of wins over Fraser Valley, including a single-game school record 42 points on Saturday evening. The 6-foot-6, 230-pound forward opened the weekend series on Friday with a solid 15-point, eight-rebound performance in only 26 minutes of court time in a 92-73 victory. The following night, the former CIS MVP and rookie of the year exploded for 42 points on 16-of-25 shooting and added eight boards and eight assists as the No. 7-ranked Spartans improved their Canada-West-leading mark to 12-2 with a 114-89 win.
Saint Mary’s hockey player Chris MacKinnon, Laval track and field athlete Alexandro Allison Abaunza and Brock hockey player Adam Schwark were the other male nominees.
Fickel, a first-year biomedical sciences student from Fort Erie, Ont., scored back-to-back game-winners last weekend as the No. 6-ranked Badgers improved to 14-2 in conference play thanks to a pair of one-goal road victories over Waterloo and No. 2 Wilfrid Laurier. On Friday, the 5-foot-6 freshman tallied the only goal of the night 7:07 into a 1-0 shutout of the Warriors. Fickel was once again the hero on Saturday when her shootout marker against all-Canadian goaltender Liz Knox lifted Brock to a 2-1 upset of the OUA-leading Golden Hawks (15-1-1).
Mount Allison hockey player Courtney King, Sherbrooke track and field athlete Pascale Délisle and Alberta basketball player Marisa Haylett were also nominated for the women’s award.
