FORMER SPARTAN DOERKSEN SIGNS SECOND PRO CONTRACT
TORONTO, Ontario – Former Trinity Western men’s basketball star Jacob Doerksen (Abbotsford, B.C.) signed his second professional contract in as many years as Slan Sports Management announced his agreeing to a deal with Rasta Vechta in Germany’s Pro A division for the 2012-13 season Wednesday.
The 6-foot-7 forward, who wore Spartans blue and yellow for three years from 2008 to 2011, played last season, his first as a professional, in Germany’s Pro B division with the UBC Hannover Tigers. Averaging 21.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and two steals per game in 33 contests, Doerksen was named Eurobasket.com Germany Pro B Center of the Year, as well as being named to the Eurobasket.com Germany Pro B First Team and Eurobasket.com Germany Pro B All Import Team.
Over his final three years at Trinity Western, Doersken averaged 20.9 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game. During his university career, he was twice voted to the CIS National Tournament All-Star Team; he’s a two-time First Team All-Canadian, and in 2009 was voted the CIS Player of the Year. In his final year at Trinity Western, Doerksen helped the Spartans to their first ever national championship medal as the Langley, B.C. based school captured a silver medal.
“My first year playing professionally was a wonderful experience,” Doerksen said. “I am excited to be moving up to Pro A and look forward to a great year ahead.”
Rasta Vechta, finished the 2011-12 regular season in Germany’s Pro B division with a 17-7 record. They beat Doerksen’s former team, UBC Hannover, in the semi-finals of the playoffs, before losing in the Pro B championship. Their strong season allowed them to get promoted to Germany’s Pro A division.
“We watched Jacob for the entire season and thought his skill set would be a tremendous addition to our club,” said Rasta Vechta board member Thomas Zubrägel. “Now that we have moved up to Pro A, Jacob is going to be an important part of our club having a successful season.”
During his Spartans career, Doerksen totaled 1852 points, which is second most in Spartans history behind Adam Friesen’s 1869, and collected 781 rebounds, which is also second most in the school’s history behind Logan Kitteringham’s 798. He also holds the Spartans record for points in a game with 42, which he put up Dec. 4, 2010 against Fraser Valley, and the record for most rebounds in a season with 344 boards in 2008-09.
