UC RIVERSIDE PREVIEW
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS TO HOST UC RIVERSIDE AT THE ENARSON
LANGLEY, British Columbia – It’ll be a Flashback Friday at Trinity Western this weekend as the Spartans men’s basketball team returns to the on-campus David E. Enarson Gymnasium for an exhibition tilt against NCAA Division 1 University of California, Riverside. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
The Spartans, who typically play at the Langley Events Centre but are waiting on the reconstructed floor to be finished, will open the 2013-14 preseason on a familiar court as the Enarson was home to TWU’s basketball and volleyball teams until 2009.
Trinity Western’s opposition Friday will see the Spartans take on the UC Riverside Highlanders, who compete in the Big West Conference. Last year, the Highlanders finished with a record of 6-25 overall while compiling a 3-15 mark within their conference. At last year’s NCAA Div. 1 tournament, the Big West Conference was represented by the University of the Pacific.
The Spartans, who finished the 2012-13 regular season with a 12-10 mark before falling to Winnipeg in the first round of the playoffs, will look to launch their season on the right foot as they seek to build upon last year’s spring semester, in which they won seven of their last eight regular season contests.
Trinity Western opens its Canada West regular season schedule Nov. 1-2 when the Spartans will host Calgary Friday and Lethbridge Saturday at the LEC.
Since 2003, the TWU men’s basketball team has hosted numerous NCAA Div. 1 schools in preseason action, including, amongst others, a Blake Griffin-led Oklahoma side in 2007-08 as well as Georgia, Creighton, Minnesota and Colorado State.
The NCAA allows a program to take an international trip once every four years. The Highlanders journey to B.C. also has them playing UBC Sept. 5 and Fraser Valley Sept. 9.
