‘Birds glide past TW in pre-season play
Langley, British Columbia – It was a slow start to the game and the season for the Trinity Western University men’s basketball team. On October 13 UBC played host to the Spartans, in TWU’s first exhibition game of their inaugural CIAU season. The ‘Birds flew out of the gate and held their pace through the game to finish ahead 72-56.
“We started slow, but came back with a run in the middle of the second half,” stated Head Coach Stan Peters. The Spartans were within 5 with just 7 minutes remaining in the game, but UBC pulled away down the stretch. “We played with apprehension and nervousness and didn’t really buy into our system till the half,” added Peters.
Although the Spartans shot 47% from the field, including 63% from behind the 3-point arc, Peters noted, “We didn’t play with sustained intensity on defense or sustained continuity on offense. Overall it was a lukewarm effort. We did some things real well, but didn’t execute.”
The 12 points and 5 rebounds of Scott Portman led the Spartans. Malcolm Campbell and Gary Chapman both added 10 points for TWU.
TWU will return home to play UCFV in the annual President’s Cup on October 15. Game time will be 8 p.m.
