Men's Basketball (exhibition)
October 15, 1999
T.W.U. Spartans (74) vs. the University College of the Fraser Valley (88)
UCFV Men Retain Possession of Cup
Langley, British Columbia - A strong second half was enough for the University College of the Fraser Valley on October 15. The Cascades stormed past the Trinity Western University men's basketball team in the second half to win the 8th annual President's Cup. The final of 88-74 gave UCFV a 5-3 lead in the over-all Cup series.
TWU started with a quick lead, but were never able to pull away in the first half and UCFV closed the gap to only 2 before the break. TWU led 36-34, but a 22-8 run in the first 10 minutes of the second half was more than enough for the Cascades. They hung on down the stretch, even after Josh Hall's three 3-pointers in the last two minutes, and finished off the Spartans in exhibition play.
Hall led all scorers with 22 points and Ryan Haviland and Jarami Reid led UCFV with 16 points apiece.
Head Coach Stan Peters commented, "We just went away from what gave us some success in the second half. We didn't play together and we must have all 5 guys playing on the same page and we allowed too many easy hoops inside."
"Scott Portman played his guts out and stuck his nose in and played hard defense," offered Peters.
"My system is brand new to everyone and everybody must buy into it and right now we are on a big learning curve. The key is to prepare for the Golden Bear (tournament) and we must improve on defense and offensive continuity," added Peters.
The Spartans travel to Edmonton to participate in the Golden Bear Invitational on October 21-23.
