CIAU Victory Tastes Sweet for Spartans
Edmonton, Alberta - They didn't need last second heroics, but it still came down to the wire. The Trinity Western University men's basketball team pulled out their first CIAU win of the season, by beating the #10 ranked team in the nation, Laurentian University. The Spartans defeated the Vees Voyegeurs in the Edmonton Journal Invitational, hosted by the University of Alberta on October 21. The final score found TWU on the winning side of 74-72 match-up.
"In the first half we really took a step forward in our continuity, both on offense and defense," noted Head Coach Stan Peters. The Spartans fought hard in the first half and led by one point at the break (40-39).
TWU kept the momentum throughout the afternoon, as they were faced with a full-court defense from Laurentian for most of the game. Spartan point guard, Tyler Coston was named player of the game, as he led the attack for TWU. "Tyler played with great composure at the point," pointed out Peters. TWU sealed the game at the free-throw line, as they converted 21 of 27 attempts.
The game's leading scorer was Laurentian's Kevin Gordon, as he had 19 points and 4 assists. Ted Dongelmans added 17 points for the Vees Voyegeurs. Josh Hall's 17 points, Malcolm Campbell's 13 points and Rick Pridmore's 12 points and 7 rebounds led TWU. Gary Chapman chipped in 5 rebounds and 5 assists for the Spartans.
"We played hard and with passion and the hard work was able to make up for some mistakes. I am really happy with the effort and I think the score shows we are improving on defense," added Peters.
TWU will turn around and face the #2 ranked team in the nation on October 22, as they battle the host Golden Bears. Game time will be 8:30 p.m. (Mt. time).
