Men's Basketball (Exhibition)
October 30, 1999
T.W.U. Spartans (78) vs. Malaspina University College (75)
Spartans In Tune for Season
Langley, British Columbia - Another exhibition win went down to the wire for the Trinity Western University men's basketball team. They hosted the Malaspina Mariners on October 30 and slipped past the Mariners with a 78-75 victory.
Malaspina led 44-43 at the half-time break, but the Spartans charged out of the gate in the second half. They built up a 9 point lead, but the Mariners fought back. TWU led the entire second half, but it was a seesaw ride. With seconds remaining on the clock, Josh Hall missed a Free Throw, but Mike Slofstra was able to tip it out to Tyler Coston to ensure TWU's lead. Malaspina was unable to convert a 3 point attempt, as time ran out.
"At times we were trying to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. We just don't know yet how to play with a lead, but we came out in the second half and did the things we needed to do to establish our game," noted Head Coach Stan Peters. The Spartans held Malaspina to only 12 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
"I was happy that we started stopping middle penetration on defense in the second half. Our whole defense is predicated on stopping the middle, so I thought we did a decent job. Offensively we didn't do badly because we haven't played against a zone yet this year. We had to work through our offense on the go," continued Peters.
Malaspina's Jason Hubbs led all scorers with 30 points and Coston tossed in 20 for the Spartans.
"Malcolm Campbell played an outstanding game, but not because of his stats. He made his presence felt, as on offense he created space in the key and on defense he plugged the middle. He changed how they had to play. Scott Portman had his best offensive game of the year and Dave (Martens) did a great job off the bench," noted Peters.
TWU will begin CIAU league action at home against Lethbridge. The November 5 game will begin at 8 pm.
