T.W.U. Spartans (60) vs University of Lethbridge (74)
Hard Lesson for Young Spartans
Langley, British Columbia - On Saturday November 6, For the second night in a row the Trinity Western University men's basketball team fell to the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. Once again it was the experience of the Pronghorns that proved the difference against the Spartans. Statistically the Spartans played even in every category on the Box Score except one. The Spartans shot only 18 % from the 3 point line (1-11), while the Pronghorns shot a sizziling 67% (6-9). Leading the way from the 3 pt line for the Pronghorns were 5th year Danny Balderson (4-7), 4th year Spencer Holt (1-1) and 4th year Ryan Hall (1-1).
The Spartans came out strong and were taking the game to the Pronghorns. With 5:30 to go in the first half the Spartans trailed the Pronghorns by only 2 points, 23-21. Twenty-two seconds later Lethbridge had scored 7 points and were up 9, 30-21. TWU continued to battle and stayed with Lethbridge to end the half down 9 points, 38-29.
The second half began with the teams trading baskets. The Pronghorns still had a 9 point lead 49-40 with 12 minutes to go in the game. It was at this point that the experienced Lethbridge players took the game to a higher level and went on a 13-5 run to push there lead to an insurmountable 17 points, 62-45. Trinity Western kept up the pressure but in the end the Pronghorns held on for a 14 point victory, 74-60.
For the most part the Spartans held there own against the 4th ranked team in the nation (CIAU). "Our goals were to keep them in the 70's and to keep Spencer Holt and Ryan Hall from breaking us down with there middle penetration, we felt that this would give us a shot at winning the game," commented TWU Head Coach Stan Peters. "Except for a minute in the first half and 4 minutes in the second half we stayed with them. But, five minutes of a lack of focus is all it takes for a team like Lethbridge to clinch a victory. They know when they need to make their runs and they take it at you," said Peters.
"Rick Pridmore had a good game for us with a double-double, 14 points and 10 rebounds. Malcolm Campbell also played well. He was causing mismatch problems for Lethbridge all game, but we failed to get him the ball when we needed too," added Peters.
The Pronghorns were led by Danny Balderson 18 points, 6 rebounds and Spencer Holt 17 points 5 reounds.
The Spartans travel to Winnipeg on November 12-13 to play the University of Winnipeg.. The Spartans look to improve on their record in Canada West league play to 2-2.
