Men's Basketball (League)
November 19, 1999
T.W.U. Spartans (79) vs. University of Regina (78)
Spartans Survive for Win
Langley, British Columbia - Start chalking up the wins. The Trinity Western University men's basketball team captured their first ever Canada West win by outlasting Regina on November 19. The Spartans led by a few points the whole way through and held on to win 79-78.
With less than a minute to go the Spartans (1-4) were down one point (75-76) after Regina (1-4) hit a pair of free throws. Rick Pridmore found himself with two quick fouls to cause him to leave the game and the Spartans were in need of a bucket. Dave Martens came through with a slicing move into the key and he hit the floater to take the 77-76 lead. Regina tossed up a jumper, but it caromed into the hands of Josh Hall, who was promptly fouled. Hall sealed the deal with both foul shots. Regina was unable to get the three to tie and settled for a two-point bucket, but time ran out on Regina, as they were down 79-78 at the final horn.
"We out-rebounded them 39-24 and that was the difference. We only allowed 3 offensive boards and that was a key in the game. Our guys bought into the idea of only allowing one shot and we showed composure down the stretch," explained Head Coach Stan Peters.
TWU's Josh Hall was the player of the game, as he went 10-14 shooting with 27 points. He also added 6 assists and 5 rebounds. Scott Goebel had 24 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists for the Cougars.
"Josh had a great game and he played almost 38 minutes. It was by far his best game of the season and he is so tough when he penetrates that Regina had a hard time with him down low," commented Peters.
"I was happy with both Dave and Gary (Chapman), as they game into the game with 8 minutes to go and four fouls and neither fouled out. Gary really showed his leadership in the last huddle, as he talked about execution," continued Peters.
"Tomorrow we need to come out tougher. Regina will be playing hard and we need to play defense like we can and cause all kinds of problems for the Cougar offense. The keys are defense, rebounding and poise on offense," added Peters.
The Spartans will battle with Regina on November 20. Game time will be 8 p.m.
