Spartan's Tale of Two Halves
Burnaby, British Columbia - The Spartans overcame a 14-point deficit in the first half to take an 11-point lead in the second and win by 3. Trinity Western University's men's basketball team traveled to Simon Fraser University to partcipate in a tournament on November 26. TWU began play with Vanguard University, a NAIA team from Southern California. TWU bounced back after a slow start to win 83-80.
The Spartans fought back from 14 points down to make the score 43-46 in favor of the Lions at the halftime break. TWU shot out in the second half, with the hot hand of Tyler Coston. Coston led the Spartan's 8-14 3-point shooting by draining 4 of 6 during the game. Coston finished with a game high 22 points. TWU led most of the second half and the game tightened at the end, but the Spartans held on down the stretch to take a big game from the American school.
"It sure is nice to get a win. This reinforces all the work we put in," stated Head Coach Stan Peters. "I think our play tonight was indicative of our work in practice. We worked together and showed our comfort in each other, especially with our team defense."
"Tyler played with good composure and shot the ball out of our offense and was a huge contributor. Rick Pridmore came off the bench and did a great job and Mike Slofstra added intensity. Gary Chapman and Josh Hall provided some good leadership on the floor," added Peters.
Hall helped TWU by adding 20 points and Chapman tossed in 15. Dave Martens led the Spartans with 6 rebounds.
TWU plays Simon Fraser University on November 27, at 7 p.m., in the final. TWU will return to CIAU action on December 3, as they host the University of Manitoba.
