Strong Game by Spartans Tarnished
Brandon, Manitoba - On Friday, January 7, 2000 the Trinity Western University men's basketball team traveled to Brandon Manitoba to play the Brandon University Bobcats. The Spartans went into Brandon hoping to knock of the 10th ranked team in the nation. The Spartans came out strong and found themselves up 6 points half way through the first half. A strong push to end the half gave the Bobcats a 1-point 39-38 lead after 20 minutes. With less than 3 minutes to go in the game the Spartans found themselves tied at 68 with the Bobcats. It was at this point that the game was changed with two no calls. A dunk attempt by TWU's Malcolm Campbell was blocked, along with Campbell and hard contact against a shooting TWU guard Josh Hall was ignored as the Bobcats ran down the floor for easy baskets after each "no call".
"I don't usually complain, but those were two hard fouls that weren't called and they ended up changing the game," commented TWU Head Coach Stan Peters.
The Spartans were forced to foul to try and get back in the game. Unfortunately for TWU, Brandon made their free throw attempts and the Spartans fell 84-75.
"It was a game we could have won," said Peters. "I thought we had a steal. We had a very strong team effort tonight. It is disappointing to leave here without the win."
The Spartans were led by Gary Chapman (9 points, 6 rebounds, 5 steals, 4 assists), Tyler Coston (16 points, 4 steals, 3 assists) Josh Hall (15 points, 2 assists, 2 steals), Ryan Jobs (15 points, 3 rebounds) and Malcolm Campbell (12 points, 6 rebounds). Statistical leaders for the Bobcats were Earnest Bell (27 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals, 5 assists), Junior Leslie (14 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals) and Greg Walker (14 points, 3 assists, 2 steals).
The Spartans play tomorrow night against the Bobcats. Game time is 8:00 pm local time.
