Missed Opportunity for Spartans

Brandon, Manitoba - On Saturday, January 8, 2000 the Trinity Western University men's basketball team played their second game in as many nights against the Brandon University Bobcats. Tonight the Spartans came out strong and were not intimidated by the Bobcats. At the end of the first half the Spartans held a slim 1 point advantage over the 10th ranked team in the country, 34-33. The Spartans shot a sizzling 50% from the field in the first half compared to Brandon's 36 %.

The second half started even better than the first for the Spartans, as they pushed their lead to 10 points with 10 minutes to go in the game. It was at this point that Brandon's Charlton Weaselhead took over. He hit 3 3-point shots in a row against the Spartans 2-3 zone to help ignite the Bobcats comeback. The final minutes of the game saw each team exchanging leads and it looked like the team that shot last would win.

With 7 seconds to go in the game the Spartans rebounded a missed Brandon free throw. Trinity Western pushed the ball up the floor looking for a shot to win. With 2 seconds to go in the game Brandon knocked the ball out of bounds. The Spartans ran a play, but the ball went harmlessly off of the rim and out of bounds as the buzzer sounded giving the Bobcats the 1 point victory, 71-70.

"We played a great game tonight. Brandon is not an easy place to play in and we almost pulled it off. Our poor free throw shooting down the stretch ended up costing us the game," commented TWU Head Coach Stan Peters.

Leading the way for the Spartans was Malcolm Campbell (20 points, 10 rebounds) "Mac had a great game, unfortunately he fouled out in the second half, we sure could have used him down the stretch," said Peters. Other standouts for Trinity Western were Tyler Coston (15 points, 3 assists, 2 steals) and Rick Pridmore (11 points, 5 rebounds).

Statistical leaders for the Bobcats were Earnest Bell (27 points, 12 rebounds), Charlton Weaselhead (13 points, 7 rebounds) and Greg Walker (11 points, 3 steals).

The Spartans are on the road again next weekend when they will travel to Victoria to play the VIKES. Game times on January 14 & 15 are 8:00 pm.
