Vikes Shut Down Spartans
Victoria, British Columbia - On Friday, January 14 the Trinity Western University men's basketball team traveled to Victoria, BC to face the University of Victoria Vikes. The Spartans ran into a Victoria team who is making a run at another national championship appearance. Ten minutes into the game the two teams were tied 11-11. Eight minutes later the Vikes had just finished an 18-0 run and the game for all purposes was over. The Vikes ended the half up 17, 36-19. Victoria started the second half where they finished the first. The Vikes went on an 11-2 run to open up the half and go up 47-21. The Spartans never gave up, but they never challenged after the 10-minute mark as they fell to the Vikes 73-52.
With the win the Vikes, who started the season 2-2, have improved to 8-5. The loss drops the Spartans to 2-9.
"Mental preparation is a big key for us. We weren't ready to play tonight. We didn't finish our shots and we backed off our intensity," commented TWU Head Coach Stan Peters. "Fortunately we didn't fold, which gives us some hope for tomorrows game."
The statistical leader for the Spartans was Ryan Jobs with 9 points. Leading the way for the Vikes was Ali Wilmott with 20 points, 9 assists.
The two teams square off again tomorrow night at McKinnon Gym in Victoria, BC. Game time is set for 8:15 pm.
