Spartans Battle

Victoria, British Columbia - Six points was enough to break the back of Trinity Western University. The Spartan's men's basketball team played their second game in 2 nights against the University of Victoria on January 15. UVIC led the entire game and polished off a 75-61 Canada West victory. UVIC improves to 9-5, while TWU drops to 2-10 in Canada West play.

The Vikes broke out to a 7-point lead in the first half and led 33-28 at the break. In the second stanza UVIC pushed their lead to 10, but TWU, on the back or Ryan Jobs, cut down the lead and with under 4 minutes to play found themselves in a battle. Allister Wilmott sealed the deal for the
Vikes as he hit two back to back 3 pointers and the Spartans never recovered, as UVIC cruised in the final minutes.

"We have no complaints about the toughness of our team. We played hard-nosed defense and it was really those 2 3-pointers that broke our back," noted Head Coach Stan Peters.

Wilmott led the game with 24 points and 7 assists. Ryan Jobs' 18 points and 6 rebounds led for TWU. Malcolm Campbell chipped in 14 points and 6 boards for the Spartans. But what really hurt TWU was UVIC's 6-14 3-point shooting and TWU's rough 1-11 from behind the arc.

"Jobs was the player of the game. Mac (Malcolm) played tough on the boards and we did a ton of things well all game. We need to continue to take steps forward. We will take the good and build for our games against UBC. We need 4 or 5 wins down the stretch to vie for a play-off spot, so it is due or die," remarked Peters.

All season long turnovers have plagued the Spartans and tonight was not different. Their 20 turnovers were too much, as UVIC only had 9, which kept them in more possessions down the stretch.

TWU will play host to an important match-up on January 21-22. UBC, who sits just ahead of TWU in the standings, will travel across town to attempt to make-up for an exhibition loss over the Christmas break. TWU and UBC tip off at 8:00 both nights and both teams will be in for a fight, as the weekend could decide who does and who doesn't attend the Canada West play-offs.
