TWU Spartans (94) vs. the University of Winnipeg Wesmen (86)
Spartans Ride First Half to Victory
Langley, British Columbia - On Friday night the Trinity Western University men's basketball team rode a 22 point half time lead, 94-86, all the way to a 94-86 victory over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen.
The Spartans dominated the first 30 minutes. With 10 minutes to go in the game TWU held a 30 point lead over the Wesmen, 76-46. The Wesmen, who are currently ranked number 10 in the CIAU, made a strong push in the final minutes to make it interesting. But, Winnipeg eventually ran out of time as they outscored the Spartans 40-18 over the final 10 minutes.
"Tonight's game was probably the best game that we have played at the CIAU level," said TWU Head Coach Stan Peters. "When we play well it is because we play defense really well. As a team we are not yet firing on all cylinders offensively, so we have to be able to play the defense and push the ball."
The Spartans were led by Josh Hall (4th year, guard, Abbotsford, BC) 26 points and Malcolm Campbell (5th year, center, Abbotsford, BC) 13 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists.
"I thought Malcolm played an outstanding game. He was scoring down low and was able to find open players even when he was triple teamed," said Peters. "Josh really cranked it up in the second half (17 second half points). He just went at them and played really well."
The Wesmen were led by Blair Chan-kent (5th year, guard, Burnaby, BC) 30 points and Sukhvir Singh (4th year, guard, Winnipeg, MB) 15 points and 7 assists.
The two teams play again Saturday, November 18, 2000 at Trinity Western University. Game time is set for 8:00 PM.
