TWU Spartans (60) vs. the University of Winnipeg Wesmen (76)
Spartans Split with Number 10
Langley, British Columbia - The University of Winnipeg men's basketball team responded in a big way to last night loss to the Trinity Western University Spartans. The Wesmen led by Lucas Buller's (5th year, forward, Winnipeg, MB) 22 points improved to 3-3 with the 76-60 win over the Spartans.
"This is the first weekend where we have won on Friday night and as a young team we have not yet learned how to win back to back games on the weekend," said TWU head coach Stan Peters. "The big step that we made this weekend was for us to win the Friday night game."
Trinity Western jumped out in front 7-2 to start the game, but from that point on it was all Winnipeg. With 6 minutes to go in the first half the Wesmen had jumped out to a 16 point lead, 32-16.
The Spartans responded to the challenge and closed the gap to 6 at the half, down 36-30. "We could have thrown in the towel in the first half, but we made it a game," said Peters.
But it was a game where the Spartans never really got on track and in spite of their efforts Trinity Western never challenge the Wesmen in the second half.
"We were just out of sync tonight, our timing was just off. We knew that they were going to come out strong, but we just couldn't put it together," commented Peters.
Winnipeg started the second half with a 13-5 run to go up 14 points, 49-35, with 15 minutes to go in the game. That was the game, as the Wesmen never let the Spartans come within 10 points, on their way to a 16 point victory.
The loss drops the Spartans to 3-5 in Canada West league play.
The Spartans were led by Tyler Coston (2nd year, guard, Blaine, WA) 15 points, Dave Martens (2nd year, guard, Abbotsford, BC) 12 points and Malcolm Campbell (5th year, center, Abbotsford, BC) 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Wesmen were led by Lucas Buller, 22 points, 6 rebounds and Sukhvir Singh (4th year, guard, Winnipeg, MB) 20 points.
Next up for the Spartans is Friday & Saturday November 24 & 25 when they will host the Brandon University Bobcats. Game time for both nights is 6:00 PM.
