TWU Spartans (78) vs. Brandon University Bobcats (80) - OT
Bobcats Squeak by Spartans
Langley, British Columbia - Tonight's men's basketball game, which saw the Trinity Western University Spartans lose to the Brandon University Bobcats 80-78 in overtime, was probably the most exciting CIAU basketball game ever played at Trinity Western University.
With 28 seconds to go in the overtime, and the Spartans leading 78-77, Brandon's Charlton Weasel Head (5th year, guard, Kainai Reservation) drove to the basket he was fouled across the arms by TWU's Josh Hall (4th year, guard, Abbotsford, BC). An intentional foul was called which gave Weasel Head two shots and Brandon the ball. Weasel Head made one out of the two to tie the game.
Brandon then worked down the clock to 8 seconds. Donald Phillips (5th year, guard, Houston, TX) drove to the basket and missed his shot but teammate Josh Masters was there for the put back, giving the Bobcats a 2-point lead and the victory.
"When you look at the game overall, there are very few teams that I have been involved with that laid their guts on the floor like this team did tonight," said Peters. "We had a number of guys battling out there, it was a total team effort tonight."
The overtime period almost never happened. With the score tied at 72 and 5 seconds to go in regulation, TWU's Josh Hall took an open jumper from just outside the 3 point line. The ball was just long and it rebounded out to center court, giving Brandon the ball with one second remaining. Off of the inbound pass, Brandon's Earnest Bell (5th year, forward, Louisville, KY) just missed a contested 3 point shot from the baseline as the buzzer went to end regulation.
"With ten seconds to go and we ran the set for Josh, I thought it was in and the game was over," said Peters.
The game was a true heavy weight contest. Both teams went on runs to open up leads and both teams countered to close the gap. The game had 21 lead changes. The Spartans biggest lead was 7 points, while the Bobcats biggest lead was 10 points.
The Spartans held a slim one point lead at the half up 35-34. With 7:00 to go in the game Brandon had their biggest lead of the game up 63-53. With 4:00 minutes to go in the game TWU's Dave Martens hit a 3 point shot to narrow the Bobcat lead to 4 points, 70-66. Spurred on by the chants of "Defense, Defense" from the near capacity crowd the Spartans continued to battle back. Brian Redekop hit a jumper to close the gap to 70-68 with 3:00 to go.
With 2:37 to go Josh Hall got a steal and sent Redekop in for another 2 points tying the game at 70-70. A minute later Redekop stepped up again and drew the foul off of Earnest Bell. Redekop made the one and one to give the Spartans the lead 72-70 with 1:40 to go. With 1:15 to go Bell made up for the earlier offensive foul as he drew a foul in the paint and made both foul shots to tie the game at 72-72.
Bell had another shot to take the lead with 27 seconds remaining. Josh Hall grabbed the rebound and worked the clock for the final shot of regulation.
With two minutes to go in the overtime, Dave Martens hit a foul shot to give the Spartans a 78-74, it was the last basket the Spartans would make in the game. Brandon's Tyrone Smith (4th year, guard, Toronto, ON) hit a 3 point shot with 1:48 to go, pulling the Bobcats to with in 1 point, 78-77.
"I look at what the kids put out tonight and it was outstanding. That is the kind of effort that we are getting and why we are able to make a statement with our play," said Peters. "Brandon is a legitimate #3 team in the country and we are right with them."
The Spartans were led by Josh Hall - 17 points, 7 rebounds, Dave Martens- 16 points, Brian Redekop - 12 points, 9 rebounds, Malcolm Campbell (5th year, center, Abbotsford, BC) - 11 points, 10 rebounds and Tyler Coston (2nd year, guard, Lynden, WA) - 11 points, 4 assist.
The Bobcats were led by Tyrone Smith- 20 points, Scott Walton (4th year, center, Pitt Meadows, BC) - 12 points, 4 rebounds and Donald Phillips - 10 points and 8 rebounds.
The two teams play again Saturday, November 25 at TWU's David E. Enarsen Gymasium. Game time is set for 8:00 PM.
