TWU Spartans (72) vs. the University of Victoria Vikes (69)
SPARTANS STILL MERRY AT UBC CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT
Langley, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University men's basketball team knocked of the 10th ranked University of Victoria Vikes 72-69 to kick off the UBC Christmas Holiday tournament.
It was a typical post Christmas game.
The Spartans came out strong and played well for the first 10 minutes of the game, but then the Christmas turkey kicked in. Victoria took full advantage of the Spartans struggles and turned a 6-point deficit after 10 minutes into a 6-point lead at the break, 36-30.
Led by Dave Martens (2nd year, guard, Abbotsford, BC) - 19 points, Tyler Coston (2nd year, guard, Blaine, WA) - 12 points and Brian Redekop (1st year, forward, Abbotsford, BC) - 18 points, who combined for 68% of TWU's offence, the Spartans found their game in the second half. Trinity Western pulled ahead of the Vikes and were up 7 with less then 5 minutes to go in the game.
"We were a little bit out of sync offensively, which is to be expected after the lay-off," said TWU head coach Stan Peters. "Tyler and Brian played really well in the second half and helped us to win the game."
The number 10 ranked Vikes were not going to give up without a fight and with 30 seconds to go in the game Victoria had cut Trinity Western's lead to 2 points.
With less then 20 seconds to go in the game Spartan center Malcolm Campbell (5th year, center, Abbotsford, BC) had two foul shots to seal the victory. He made the first, but couldn't get the second to go. The Vikes had what they wanted, a shot at tying the game.
In an attempt to confuse the Victoria offense the Spartans switched to a zone defense for the final seconds. It worked for the most part as Victoria managed to get two attempts at tying the game, but both Nathan Ashmead's and Ali Wilmott's shots fell short.
"We had a solid ‘Christmas' tournament game against the number two team in our conference," said Peters. "Over all I'm happy, especially when you compare us to where we were a year ago. Last year at this tournament we were getting pounded and this year we are not only competing but winning tough games."
Statistical Leaders:
(TWU) Dave Martens 19 points, 2 rebounds; Tyler Coston 12 points, 10 rebounds; Brian Redekop 18 points, 4 rebounds; Malcolm Campbell 8 points, 9 rebounds.
(Victoria) Ali Wilmott 16 points, 4 assists, 4 steals; Keith Bustard 15 points, 6 rebounds; Nathan Ashmead 11 points.
Players of the game: (TWU) Brian Redekop (Vic) Keith Bustard
Next up for the Spartans is day two of the UBC tournament, Friday, December 29, vs. the University of Calgary. Game time is set for 4:00 PM at UBC.
