TWU Spartans (84) vs the University of Calgary Dinos (82)
Buzzer Beater Makes it Two in a Row For the Spartans
Vancouver, British Columbia - Josh Hall (4th year, Guard, Abbotsford, BC) kept the Trinity Western University men's basketball team close to the University of Calgary Dinos down the stretch and Malcolm Campbell (5th year, Center, Abbotsford, BC) sealed the 84-82 victory with a bucket at the buzzer.
Paced by Al Penner's (3rd year, Forward, Abbotsford, BC) 15 first half points the Spartans jumped out in front of the Dinos 44-34 after the first 20 minutes. But Calgary's John Riad shot the Dinos back into the game with 16 second half points. Then with less than two minutes to go in the game, Adam Begley's 3 pointer gave Calgary a 78-76 lead.
"Al Penner had an incredible first half," said TWU Coach Stan Peters. "His three 3-pointers really gave us a boost in the first half."
Calgary was unable to build on their lead as the Spartans responded to every Dino basket. First Campbell tied the game on a post up then Hall tied the game on two separate occasions with back to back foul shots.
With 30 seconds to go in the game the Spartans defense held tough as Calgary was unable to convert on their last possession of the game. With 18 seconds to go in the game the Spartans put the ball in the hands of Dave Martens (2nd year, Guard, Abbotsford, BC). Martens went to Campbell down low on the baseline. Campbell turned and took his shot at the victory, but the shot was blocked. As time was running out, Campbell quickly recovered his blocked shot and hit a fade away as the buzzer was sounding.
The victory gives the Spartans a 2-0 record at the UBC Christmas tournament, while the loss drops the Dinos to 1-1.
"We were forced to play with a lot of different line-ups today and we showed a lot of resiliency in pulling this one out," said Peters.
