TWU Spartans (67) vs the McGill University Redmen (81)
Spartans Win UBC 1st Annual Holiday Classic
Vancouver, British Columbia - It was one of those do you want the good news or the bad news questions for the Trinity Western University men's basketball team.
The bad news was that you lost your final game of the tournament 81-67 to the McGill University Redmen. The good news is that you because you beat the University of Victoria 72-69 (Thursday) and the University of Calgary 84-82 (Saturday) you won the 1st Annual UBC Holiday Classic Men's Basketball Tournament.
In the final game of the tournament Victoria pulled out a three-point victory over the UBC 68-65, which meant that the Spartans won the Classic. Victoria, Calgary and Trinity Western all tied at 2-1 but Trinity Western won because they beat the Vikes and Dinos head-to-head.
"We took some steps forward [in this tournament] and we put ourselves in a good position for the push in the second semester," said Peters. "Beating Victoria and Calgary is huge. We have built a lot of confidence in ourselves by just knowing that if we do the things that we need to do we can beat just about anybody."
Tournament All-Stars were: UBC - Courtney Kolla, TWU - Malcolm Campbell, Cal - John Riad, Laurier - Daniel Jonker, McGill - Denburk Reid, Victoria - Ali Wilmott.
Back to the bad news.
On the back of Domenico Marcario's 22 points, the McGill University Redmen (1-2) shot a sizzling 80% (20-25) in the second half in earning their 81-67 victory over the Trinity Western University Spartans (2-1).
The Spartans played a strong first half and used a strong defensive to build a 30-26 lead at the half.
Unfortunately for the Spartans the second half was all McGill. The Spartans were unable to handle the Redmen's defensive pressure as McGill outscored the Spartans 55-37 in the second half.
"Our kids really worked hard, but we just couldn't finish tonight," said TWU head coach Stan Peters. "We didn't handle McGill's pressure very well and the wheels fell off our offense in the second half."
The victory by the Redmen prevents the Spartans from sweeping the University of British Columbia Christmas Tournament. Earlier in the tournament the Spartans had defeated the University of Victoria 72-69 (Friday) and the University of Calgary 84-82 (Saturday).
