TWU Spartans (63) vs. the University of Victoria Vikes (76)
Spartans Falter Down the Stretch
Langley, British Columbia - The University of Victoria Vikes (12-4) pulled out a come from behind victory against the hometown Trinity Western University Spartans (6-11) in men's basketball action Friday night in Langley, BC.
The Vikes, who were down 37-32 at the half, outscored the Spartans 44-26 in the second half on their way to a 13 point victory, 76-63.
Victoria came out flying in the second half. The Vikes defense stymied the Spartans at every turn and limited the Spartans to only 38% shooting over the final 20 minutes.
At the start, the game had all the trappings of a knock down drag-out defensive battle. Both teams shot well in the first half (VIC 54%, TWU 48%) but quality shots were few and far between for both teams. The difference for the Spartans was that they were on fire from behind the arc. Led by Josh Hall's (4th yr, G, Abbotsford, BC) 3-5, 12 points, the Spartans shot a sizzling 69% (9-13) from 3-point land.
"We came out really strong tonight," said TWU head coach Stan Peters. "We were playing as a team and we executed our game plan throughout the entire half.
The Vikes, who are currently ranked 8th in the CIAU, came out strong to start the second half. Victoria raised their defensive intensity and executed at the offensive end to spark a 18-4 run over the first 5 minutes of the second half. Up 50-41 Victoria started to play relaxed and never allowed the Spartans to get back into the game as they closed out the game with a 26-22 run.
"We were gearing up to make a defensive stand at the start of the second half, but we didn't and we allowed them to score on 3 of their first 4 possessions," said Peters. "We are successful when we play as a team, when we do not we struggle."
The Vikes were led by Keith Bustard (4th yr, G, Vancouver, BC) 29 points, 4 rebounds and Allister Wilmott (5th yr, G, Victoria, BC) 13 points, 4 rebound, 4 assists, 3 steals. The Spartans were led by Josh Hall 16 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and Tyler Coston (2nd yr, G, Blaine, WA) 14 points, 4 rebounds.
The two teams play again Saturday, January 27, 2001. Game time at TWU in Langley, BC is set for 8:00 PM.
