TWU Spartans (68) vs. the University of Victoria Vikes (80)
Slow Start Stops Spartans
Langley, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University men's basketball team dug themselves a hole they could not get out of, in Saturday night's 80-68 loss to the University of Victoria.
The Spartans played the good hosts and spotted the Vikes a 15-point half time lead, 42-27. Trinity Western battled hard for the entire second half, but they were never able to overcome the deficit.
"We took ourselves out of the game early by allowing them to score on 19 of their first 35 possessions," said TWU coach Stan Peters. "Since Christmas they have just come together. If [Allister] Wilmott (5th yr, G, Victoria, BC) and [Keith] Bustard (4th yr, G, Vancouver, BC) keep the pressure on the parameter they can win the whole thing."
Victoria played a variety of defenses in order to limit Trinity Western's leading scoring, Josh Hall (4th yr, G, Abbotsford, BC) - 17. 1 pts/game, from being effective in the game. The Vike executed the plan perfectly as the limited Hall to just 1 point.
"They mixed up their defenses really well, and we are not experienced enough to make the adjustments," said TWU head coach Stan Peters. "Teams are keying on Josh. They are taking away our first look and we have to be more patient and wait for him to work off of the screens to get open."
The Spartans cut into the deficit in the second half and got to within 12 points of Victoria on a number of occasions. They outplayed and outscored Victoria 41-38 over the final 20 minutes, but it was not enough to gain the victory.
"I'm happy that we laid it on the line in the second half," said Peters. "Somehow we just have to get one win to get things going."
Leading the way for the Vikes were Wilmott - 23 points, 8 rebounds and Bustard - 14 points and 6 rebounds. The Spartans were led by Tyler Coston (2nd yr, G, Blaine, WA) - 16 points, 3 rebounds and Brian Redekop (1st yr, F, Abbotsford, BC) - 15 points, 4 rebounds.
The # 8 ranked (CIAU) Vikes improved to 14-4 with the victory, as the Spartans dropped to 6-12.
The Spartans now travel to Lethbridge, AB to face the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. Game time is set for 6:30 on Friday and Saturday, February 2-3.
