TWU Spartans (82) vs. the University of Calgary Dinos (67)
Still Up for Grabs...
Langley, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University men's basketball team defeated the University of Calgary Dinos 82-67 Friday night in Canada West League play.
The hard fought win got them marginally closer to the play-offs. It potentially made it a 3-team race, providing the Spartans can win again tomorrow. The Spartans 8-13 are now tied with the University of British Columbia and the University of Saskatchewan in the hunt for the final two play-off spots. The loss drops the Dinos to 7-14.
If UBC and SASK both win tomorrow night then they will have the final two play-off spots. If one of them loses and the Spartans win, then TWU takes one of the final spots. If the Spartans lose and UBC and SASK both lose, get out your calculator because it gets ugly.
"I knew that my job before the game was to control the adrenaline with our players, because you could just see that they were ready to play," said TWU head coach Stan Peters. "It was easy coaching today."
The Spartans came out strong and full of energy. Led by Tyler Coston's (2nd yr, G, Blaine, WA) - 12 first half points (21 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds) the Spartans played strong team basketball and at half time had built a 10 point lead, 39-29. "Tyler just played within his means tonight," said Peters. "He had one of his better games this season."
Trinity Western never let Calgary get into the game in the second half. Josh Hall's (4th yr, G, Abbotsford, BC) - 17 second half points (24 points, 6 assists, 3 steals) led the Spartans on a 26-17 run to build a 19 point, 65-46 lead with 10 minutes to go in the game.
"The key point to tonight's game was our unselfishness," said Peters. "Which showed itself in our turnovers, [11 turnovers] probably our lowest for the season."
Calgary never challenged down the stretch as the Spartans ran out the clock for a 15-point victory.
Leading the way for the Dinos were Andrew Stordeur (3rd yr, G, Edmonton, AB) - 19 points, 4 rebounds and Whitney Hornsberger (1st yr, G, Regina, SK) - 15 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists.
The two teams match up again Saturday night for the final league game of 2000-2001. Game time at Trinity Western University is set for 8:00 PM.
