TWU Spartans (69) vs. the University of Calgary Dinos (71)
Spartans Head to the Second Season
Langley, British Columbia - With Saturday night's 71-69 loss to the University of Calgary Dinos the Spartans men's basketball team made preparations for their first ever post season appearance.
For the Spartans to make the post season they needed the University of Saskatchewan to loose and the University of British Columbia to win. With these outcomes it would not matter what happened at TWU Saturday night. The Spartans got just what they needed as Saskatchewan lost 70-67 to the University of Winnipeg and the Thunderbirds beat the University of Lethbridge 91-77.
At the conclusion of tonight's 2-point thriller the Spartans did not know if they would make the post season, because the UBC match had not yet concluded. Five minutes later, the Spartans sorrow over the loss, which had they won would have clinched the play-off spot, turned to joy as the UBC result's were announced to the team and the 700+ fans in attendance at TWU's David E. Enarsen Gymnasium.
Tonight's match up started with the Spartans unable to stay with Calgary early in the game, as John Riad (2nd yr, G, Estevan, SK) paced the Dinos to an early 7-0 lead. The Spartans battled back midway through the first half to tie the Dinos at 22 with 9:30 to go in the half. But, the Dinos then pushed their lead back to 9 points with a 14-5 run over the next 5 minutes. Five minutes later, Riad's 20th point of the half, off of a lay-up, put the Dinos up 41-33 after the first 20 minutes.
"We didn't match Calgary's intensity to start the game, which ended up being the game. We let Riad go off in the first half. But we held him to 7 in the second half and closed the gap, but not enough for the win," said TWU head coach Stan Peters. "But we got what we wanted, a chance to keep playing after the regular season."
The Spartans came out strong to start the second half and took their first lead of the game 52-51 with just under 12:00 minutes remaining. For the rest of the match, Calgary tried to pull away, but the Spartans hung tough. With :46 seconds remaining Malcolm Campbell had two free-throw to give the Spartans the lead. Campbell hit the front end but missed the second. With the game tied and the clock running down Calgary's Richie Gill drove the lane and hit a runner to give the Dinos a 2 point lead 71-69 with :11 seconds remaining. With :04 seconds remaining Campbell had another opportunity to tie the game but his jumper rattled out. The Spartans were forced to foul. Calgary's Richie Gill missed both of his free-throw with :01 second remaining. Off of the rebound, TWU's Josh Hall threw a ¾ court desperation shot that almost went in to give the Spartans the win.
Brian Redekop (1st yr, F, Abbotsford, BC) led the Spartans with 19 points and 8 rebounds, while Josh Hall (4th yr, G, Abbotsford, BC) chipped in 16 points. John Riad's 27 points and Whitney Hornsberger (1st yr, G, Regina, SK) - 11 points, 6 rebounds led the Dinos.
The Spartans will now head to Simon Fraser University to play the Clansmen in the quarterfinals of the Canada West play-offs.
