TWU Spartans (67) at the University of Guelph Gryphons (76) - Overtime
Spartans Lose Overtime Thriller to Gryphons
GUELPH, Ontario - The Trinity Western University men's basketball team opened their preseason Friday night with a thrilling 76-67 overtime loss to the hometown University of Guelph Gryphons.
The entire game was a battle between two equally matched teams. The Spartans held a 5 point lead at the end of the first half, 30-25. But the Gryphons responded in the 2nd half and were able to take their own 5 point lead with less then two minutes to go in the second half.
The Gryphons almost had the game won in regulation, but the Spartans stormed back and tied the game at 63-63 when TWU's Brian Redekop (2nd yr, forward, Abbotsford, BC) hit a 15 foot jumper with 2 seconds to go in regulation.
Unfortunately for the Spartans foul trouble caught up with them in the overtime period as they had 5 players foul out in the final 5 minutes. The Gryphons took advantage of the situation and outscored the Spartans 13-4 in the overtime period.
Leading scorers for the Gryphons were Nadan Kapetanovic with 33 and Mike Ayanbadejo with 22. The Spartans were led by Ryan Anderson (1st yr, forward, Abbotsford, BC) with 21 points and Tyler Coston (3rd yr, guard, Blaine, WA) with 15. "Ryan had a fantastic game as a freshman playing his first CIS game," said TWU coach Stan Peters.
"The kids played really hard tonight," said TWU head coach Stan Peters. "The foul trouble hurt us throughout the match and ended up costing us in the overtime."
The Gryphons had 44 shots from the foul line compared to the Spartans 26 shots.
Next up for the Spartans is McMaster University. Game time Saturday night in Hamilton, ON is set for 7:00 PM EST.
