TWU Spartans (97) vs. the UCC Sun Demons (73)
Spartans Vanquish Demons
Langley, British Columbia - The Spartan men's basketball team opened their season with a 97-76 run-and-gun win against the UCC Sun Demons Friday night at TWU. Led by Brian Redekop's (3rd yr, Forward, Aldergrove, BC) 20 points, TWU started the scoring early and never let up for the entire match.
When asked if he was satisfied with his team's play tonight, Head Coach Stan Peters said, "For our first game? Yeah, I'm satisfied. UCC is tough; last year we beat them in overtime and the year before we lost to them. They threw some stuff at us that we haven't even practiced yet, but our starters showed up tonight and led by example."
The Spartans opened the scoring going on a 12-1 run in the first five minutes, and never relinquished the lead for the entire game. Halfway through the first quarter the score was 26-9 as Dave Martens (4th yr, Guard, Abbotsford, BC) and Adam Friesen (2nd yr, Guard, Abbotsford, BC) rained threes on the frustrated Sun Demon defense.
The Sun Demons went on a small run to open the second half but could not significantly dent the 25-point lead the Spartans had had going into the half.
TWU guard Kyle Kooger (1st yr, Guard, Surrey, BC) made a nifty little play partway through the second half as he took the breakaway pass from a steal made by teammate Adam Friesen (2nd yr, Guard, Abbotsford, BC). With a UCC defender hot on his heels Kooger made the no-look over-the-shoulder pass for trailing David Bron (1st yr, Forward, Surrey, BC) who converted the layup, bringing an appreciative roar from Spartan fans.
Both coaches played their entire roster, taking advantage of the exhibition match to experiment with different combinations of players.
The Spartans' next home game is Friday, October 18 against the alumni at 8:00. Come watch the old guys take on the young guys, and see whether age and treachery will win out over youth and skill!
