TWU Spartans (80) at the UBC Thunderbirds (78)
Pacific Division Finals...Part Two
Vancouver, British Columbia - In a thrilling rematch of last season's Pacific Division Finals, the Trinity Western Spartans traveled across town to take on the UBC Thunderbirds notching the much-needed win, 80-78, thanks to some clutch free throw shooting down the stretch by Logan Kitteringham and Brian Banman.
The score remained close throughout the first half as both teams battled for control, but the Spartans closed the half with a 7-1 run to go into the locker room up six points, 40-34.
The momentum from the first half run carried into the second for the visiting Spartans, and they stretched their lead to as much as 13 (50-37) after a big three by Banman. The T-Birds maintained their composure, however, and patiently chipped away at the lead for the next eight minutes. After gradually closing the gap, they took the lead (59-58) off a three-pointer by Jordan Yu and then went on an 11-3 run to go up by eight points. That was as large as the gap would be the rest of the way and the game became a battle for the final three minutes.
With just over three minutes remaining, TWU called a timeout to refocus. UBC was up by eight (76-68), but then the Spartans scored nine unanswered points to take a 77-76 lead with just over one minute remaining. The T-Birds regained the lead on a layup but then fouled Logan on a rebound. Kitteringham went to the line and calmly sunk both free throws to give his team the lead one last time with only 20 seconds on the clock. He was fouled again after stealing the ball from UBC guard Karlo Villanueva, and went to the line holding onto a precarious one-point lead. This time the free throws both rimmed out, but somehow Brian Banman ended up with the loose ball and hit one of two free throws to ice the win.
"Tonight was a fantastic team effort," stated TWU Coach Stan Peters. "We had nine guys play double-figures in minutes and it was a team win."
Logan Kitteringham was the leading scorer on the night, sinking 25 points on 8-9 shooting, as well as 7 rebounds and 3 assists. "Kitteringham was amazing; he put the team on his back and carried them," said Coach Peters.
UBC was led by Casey Archibald's 18 points and 6 boards.
TWU plays at UBC again Saturday night at 8pm at the War Memorial Gymnasium.
Game Notes: The Spartans had four players in double figures tonight, including: Logan, Adam Friesen (17 points, 5 boards, 5 assists and 4 steals), Dan Young (15 points, 7 boards, 4 blocks), & Brain Banman (12 points, 3 boards, 4 assists, 3 steals)...the T-Birds had five players scoring in double figures: Casey, Ryder McKeown, Karlo Villanueva, Craig Rollins & Pat Sponaski...the Spartans shot 56.9% from the field...
