TWU Spartans (66) vs. Victoria Vikes (64)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS LATE FREE THROWS SINK VIKES
LANGLEY, British Columbia - Free throws were the story on this night as the University of Victoria Vikes shot the bulk of them, but the Trinity Western University Spartans made the key ones late to give the Spartans a 66-64 victory. TWU hit five free throws in the final minute, including the game-winner by rookie guard Jon Loewen (Abbotsford, B.C.).
UVIC held a decided advantage in free throw attempts for the game with 36 attempts to TWU's 20. The Vikes were sent to the line 21 times in the first half, but made just 10 of them, while the Spartans were just one of two from the stripe.
Since the Spartans couldn't get to the line in the first half, they made up for it by shooting threes, making seven of 11, and shot 54 percent from the field. TWU led after one quarter 15-8, but held just a four point halftime lead at 34-30.
The Vikes made a comeback in the third, as post Mitch Gudgeon (Victoria) scored seven of his 10 points in the quarter, including five straight on a free throw, dunk, and tip-in.
UVIC started the fourth with a 50-48 lead, when Gudgeon picked up his fourth foul. Then TWU's foul trouble caught up with them too as two starters fouled out. First it was post Joe Vroom (Abbotsford, B.C.) with five minutes remaining, and then guard Luke Robinson (Ahousat, B.C.) followed two minutes later. The two teams would trade baskets down the stretch, and the game was tied at 64 with under a minute left.
Vikes forward Tyler Hass (Victoria) drove the lane for the go-ahead score but had his shot blocked by Michael Brouwer (Nanaimo, B.C.). The rebound went to Loewen, who raced into the frontcourt before he was fouled. He then buried two free throws to give the Spartans a lead, and time would run out on the Vikes.
Lance Verhoeff (Calgary) led the Spartans in scoring with 14 points and nine rebounds, and Robinson finished with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Hass had a game high 15 points along with three rebounds and two steals, and Gudgeon finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
With the win TWU improves to 5-8 in the Canada West, while UVIC falls to 9-4. The two teams play again Saturday night, January 5 at 8 p.m. at TWU's David E. Enarson Gymnasium.
Game Notes- Verhoeff's nine rebounds equals a season high he had against the Winnipeg Wesmen November 23, 2007...This was the ninth time this season Hass has led the Vikes in scoring...The game was broadcast live on GoSpartans.ca
